We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Simmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My idea for my business honestly started in high school. I used to watch a lot of intimate videos and I would see them using adult toys, and I used to want one of my own. By my senior year I had gotten obsessed with the videos and was patiently waiting to turn eighteen so I could go to the adult toy shop in my hometown. And on my eighteenth birthday I went and I was excited to be there, I was analyzing the toy walls, the lingerie mannequins and even the TVs. I knew at that moment I wanted my own store. However, the older I got, the more discouraged I was to have my own business so I kept putting it off but I knew it was going to happen regardless. I moved to Atlanta when I was twenty six and Atlanta’s hustle culture put me in the mindset to really work on my business, so I started writing down ideas.
I didn’t want to start off with a store front first, because of the money so I decided to make it strictly online for the moment. I was in between three different business names but decided on “Tyler’s Toy Boxxx” because it just seemed RAW to me. I found a vendor and went from there and that’s how we got here.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m the owner of “Tyler’s Toy Boxxx,” three Xs cause it’s X-rated. Like I said before, I knew in high school that I wanted to be in this business industry. It’s not easy at all though. Because of what I sell, I can’t post all my products on social media. And you know, in this generation you have to make content everyday to get your business shown to the world or even just in your hometown. I’ve been in Facebook jail twice, had my videos taken down from instagrams and TikTok, and had pages deleted just because I wanted to show off my products. It was definitely discouraging, and at one point it had me thinking that maybe I don’t even want this business and I should just quit. But quitters never win. I dwelled on that thought for maybe a week or two and got myself back in the groove of things. I had to get smarter about my content, do more pop up shops and still post everyday so I can stay relevant and people can find me.
I market my business as health and wellness because it really is. Adult toys are self care essentials for women and some men, and they can improve a dying relationship with a spouse.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to food, everybody knows I love chicken so we’re hitting up all my favorite chicken spots up here. First we’ll go to Johnny’s Chicken and Waffles in College Park, then to Hungry AF in Decatur, GA and also Lit-Ass Wings in Decatur also. When it comes to having fun, I like to go to Puttshack off Howell mill, and the roof on Ponce city market. Anything else is just a random adventure.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friend Demi is in the same field as me and she helped me out tremendously. You know people love to gatekeep, but when I decided to move forward with my business, I texted her and asked her what vendors do she use and she sent me a list of ten and told me about their prices and who she mainly used and everything. That might’ve been a small gesture to her but it meant a lot to me because, she didn’t have to do that. She didn’t have to help at all. She could’ve easily been like “I had to figure it out on my own so you should too..” But she didn’t, and we’re still friends and still be helping each other.
