We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Goforth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve been a music lover since I was a kid. Listening to the radio and albums with my parents growing up sparked my ambition to pick up guitar and write songs as a teenager. I love a phrase I found online: “Music is what feelings sound like.”
After attending many concerts in my high school and college years, I knew deep down I needed to step out on the stage myself and share these “feelings” with others. After a few open mic nights of sharing my original tunes, I haven’t looked back and am excited to continue telling my story through songs.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey as a live performer started with one open mic night. A childhood friend inspired me to make the jump into the music world as we both knew I would have regrets if I didn’t break out of my comfort zone. I signed up for a three-song slot at the Red Clay Music Foundry. I sang nervously for 15 minutes with my acoustic guitar, and the rest is history. I’m proud and grateful I made that leap from budding musician to a performer with a second home on the stage. Today, my passion for music both as a songwriter and an audience member continues to grow. Whether under the lights or in the crowd, I get excited being in those special moments.
As a singer, guitarist and drummer, I love music of all genres and I feel this is reflected both in my original work as well as cover songs at my live shows. My sound is not confined to one genre and I enjoy writing music that doesn’t have to fit a certain mold. I’ve released acoustic Americana style songs as well as heavier rock tunes, aired on both country and alternative rock radio stations in Atlanta. My debut radio single “Forty Miles to Macon” won Best Music Film at the Macon Film Festival and received 10 other film festival awards across the country.
At the end of the day, I’m most grateful for the friendships and connections I’ve made as a musician. I met my wife sharing my song at a film festival and have made lifelong friends through sharing stages and practicing long hours in the rehearsal space. Music has saved me and brought a much bigger purpose to my time here on this planet. My songs come from both personal experience and a story telling perspective, and my wish is that they can bring some joy and hope to anyone who listens.
I’m super excited for the years to come. With new music on the horizon and plans to elevate my live show with more instrumentation, I’m really looking forward to breathing new life onto the stage and sharing more songs with listeners in the future.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A lifelong “Atlantan”, I have attended concerts across the city since my teenage years. I would take my best friend to The Tabernacle or Smith’s Olde Bar to catch a show. We could pick up some sushi and a sweet tea and head to Piedmont Park for the afternoon and then catch views of Centennial Park from the ferris wheel. An evening in Marietta to watch the Braves in action would round out the day.
From my time in Athens as a Georgia bulldog to launching my music career in Atlanta, I’m proud to call Georgia both my childhood and “music home”. Art and music is alive and well here, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve drawn inspiration from so many sources in my songwriting and music career. The bands Sevendust and Switchfoot hooked me into the world of music as a teenager and continually inspire me to become a better songwriter, guitar player and singer. I must give a big shoutout to my wife Madeleine for her love, support and joining me on stage to sing, my parents for being my biggest fans, and my friends for always being so encouraging and attending live shows.
I owe a big shoutout to my friends and bandmates who have joined me along the way in the studio and on stage. We’ve created amazing synergy over the years. My buddy Kyle Dominy and I created a duo in the early 2010s that pushed me into the world of songwriting and collaboration. Matt Jones, Collin Rucker, Alex May, Michael Stewart, Tom Blair and I have rocked out countless shows across Georgia. They have inspired me to be a better musician along my journey; so much time and energy gets poured into the writing/recording process and live show production.
