Meet Tyler Campbell | Inspirational Speaker and Amazon Best Selling Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, what do you attribute your success to?
When I was 16 years old, I got busted for underage drinking in Austin, Tx at Austin High School. My punishment by the district was being sent to the alternative education system. My father, Earl Campbell, an NFL Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy Winner, made me call every division 1 college coach who was recruiting me for football at that time. I had to tell them what I had gotten busted for and that I would be spending the remainder of my junior year of high school in the alternative system. It was during this time in my life that my mother, Reuna, passed me a book called The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. I ended up losing all my scholarships, but I was confident in the fact the man up above had a plan for me. I ended up going to Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. I clawed my way out of JC and earned a football scholarship to San Diego State University. summer of 2005. The process taught me patience, dedication and gifted me a powerful work ethic. So, you see when multiple sclerosis came knocking on my door like thief in the night Dec. 2008, as a junior at SDSU, quitting was never an option. I became the first to play division one college football with this autoimmune disease. The fact that the good Lord was so patient with me during those many years in life when I ran away from the calling, he placed over my heart is the factor behind my success. I was always terrified when it came to spinking in front of people. My palms would sweat and so often it felt that my heart would be beating out of my chest. As a senior in college, I was forced to take a freshman speech class I had been running away from for four years. When I entered the class, I actually felt at home and at peace. Then I understood, “MS can take my body, but it can never take the ability to speak with vulnerability and transparency when it comes to life’s trials and tribulations,” I went through those trials in my life because he needed for me to get to a place to speak about them as a means of inspiring others. He gave me a journey and that journey serves as my foundation. That foundation has allowed to travel the country as an inspirational speaker.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an Inspirational Speaker, I had been wanting to write a book for quite some time. The problem was that every time I would sit down to write no words would come to mind. The reason being is because there were so many wounds that were left unaddressed in my life. As a result, my blood was spilling over onto the hearts and minds of the people I love the most. I started seeing a therapist and over the course of that year of seeing him, it really allowed me to revisit my wrongs, address people who hurt me, be a better friend, husband and father. Here is the best part, because I was so willing to go through this soul reconstruction my speaking became more powerful. Then the book became easier to write and I recognized that the book was a means of freeing up my 12-year-old self. So, you can understand the shock and surprise when my publisher, The Publishing Advantage Group, called me to let me know my new book, The Ball Came Out: Life From The Other Side of The Field, made it on the Amazon Best Seller Sports Biography list.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a city boy, but I am country at heart. My cousins nicknamed me the city cowboy. Horses are an important part of my life, so when folks come to visit, I very much want to introduce them to that world. So, for me it’s getting out of the city and heading to the country. I want them to experience the joy of viewing the world from the saddle on a horse. After a day of horseback riding, then we tear the roads up on four wheelers. That country life and keeping things simple is a peace that I wish everyone could experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The first person that comes to mind is my amazing wife, Shana. We met at San Diego State, she was an amazing track and field athlete. We became great friends in college, and she was one of the few people that actually knew about my multiple sclerosis journey at that time. Shana has always been the much-needed shoulder to lean on. She has always spoken life into my spirit and been my greatest cheerleader. It’s truly a blessing when your best friend becomes your wife and love of your life. We have been married since September 16, 2011. My queen is also the mother to our three beautiful children: Messiah (9), Cheyenne (4) and Saige (1). All that I am is because of who they collective are and the amazing women that Shana is.
