Meet Turquisha Lasker-Smith | Elementary School Counselor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Turquisha Lasker-Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Turquisha, how do you think about risk?
As a school counselor, I’ve found that stepping out of my comfort zone has been key to personal and professional growth. Taking calculated risks—like introducing new programs or advocating for students in unconventional ways—has allowed me to better support their diverse needs. For example, collaborating with teachers to address sensitive issues has helped create a more inclusive and supportive school environment. Embracing these challenges has not only enhanced my skills but also positively impacted the students I work with.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a school counselor, my journey has been both challenging and rewarding. What sets me apart is my commitment to addressing not just academic concerns but also the social and emotional well-being of my students. I’m particularly proud of implementing programs that foster inclusivity and support for all students, recognizing that their mental health is integral to their academic success.
Reaching this point in my career wasn’t easy. The role of a school counselor is multifaceted, involving collaboration with educators, parents, and the community to create a supportive environment. Balancing these responsibilities while advocating for systemic changes required resilience and continuous learning. I overcame challenges by building strong relationships and staying committed to the belief that every student deserves comprehensive support.
As a school counselor, I prioritize exposing students to diverse experiences that resonate with their backgrounds and interests. This approach not only broadens their perspectives but also fosters a sense of belonging and understanding within the school community. Building strong relationships is central to my role, making my work both more enjoyable and effective in addressing various challenges. By attending community events and supporting students’ extracurricular activities, I actively nurture these vital connections. Such involvement allows me to better understand the unique contexts of each student, enabling me to provide more personalized and impactful support.
Throughout this journey, I’ve learned the importance of adaptability, empathy, and proactive communication. These lessons have been crucial in navigating the evolving landscape of education and student needs.
I want the world to know that my dedication lies in empowering students to reach their full potential, both academically and personally. My story is one of perseverance, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to the holistic development of every student I have the privilege to counsel.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta offers an incredible array of activities and an amazing food scene! Originally from Texas, I’ve spent the past four years here and still feel like a tourist, always discovering something new. If my family or best friend were visiting for a weekend, I’d want them to experience the best the area has to offer.
Day 1: Exploring Alpharetta
Starting in Alpharetta, where I reside, the downtown area is charming with its unique boutiques and eateries. We’d visit “UP on the Roof,” a rooftop restaurant perched atop Liberty Hall. It offers 360° views of North Atlanta, overlooking Alpharetta City Hall and the Town Green at City Center, with Kennesaw Mountain visible in the distance. The menu features a variety of dishes perfect for enjoying with a cocktail while taking in the beautiful scenery.
Day 2: Immersing in Atlanta’s History and Culture
The next day, we’d head into Atlanta to delve into its rich history. Visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, including his childhood home and the Civil Rights Museum, provides profound insights into the nation’s past. We’d also explore the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium, both offering unique and memorable experiences.
Dining Highlights
For dining, some of my favorite spots include:
• Cirque ATL: Located in Buckhead, Cirque Southern Cuisine offers an upscale soul food experience. The menu features a variety of Southern classics in a vibrant atmosphere.
• Paschal’s: An Atlanta institution situated in the Historic Castleberry Hill Neighborhood, Paschal’s is renowned for its rich history and delectable soul food. It’s more than a restaurant; it’s a monument to history and hope.
• Nobu Atlanta: For a special dining experience, Nobu offers world-class Japanese cuisine in a sophisticated setting. Their menu includes an unlimited selection of sushi, salads, and hot dishes, making it perfect for a memorable meal.
Day 3: Sunday Service at The dReam Center Church of Atlanta
Faith is central to my family and friends, so attending a service at The dReam Center Church of Atlanta would be essential. Led by Bishop William Murphy III, an international gospel recording artist, the church offers inspiring services that resonate deeply.
This itinerary blends the best of Alpharetta’s charm and Atlanta’s rich cultural tapestry, ensuring a weekend filled with memorable experiences and meaningful connections.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to express my deepest gratitude to my parents, Roosevelt and Sarah Lasker. Their unwavering dedication and hard work have profoundly shaped who I am today. My father, as a pastor, has inspired me to be a catalyst for change and to approach all my endeavors with passion. My mother’s compassionate heart has instilled in me the importance of loving deeply, offering support, and encouraging everyone I encounter. Both are esteemed figures in our community, teaching me the value of sacrifice and the importance of faith in all aspects of life. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for everything. I am who I am because of you.
