We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevor Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trevor, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risk are necessary as an actor. Without taking risks I feel like there’s no growth. When I first started doing theatre in town I was content on fitting into whatever role casting would place me. I felt like a passenger in my own life. Now my goal is to extend my grasp beyond what people expect of me. I love using my gender expression in my art. It’s liberating and I strive to be an inspiration to others like me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey as a performer was definitely not easy. Being a plus size, non binary, gender non conforming, black person this industry is not made for me. It’s something that I struggle with still but I honestly have the best friends in the world. Without them I would have given up long ago but here I am! I’m so thankful for the opportunities that I’ve had. Playing Pythio in Head Over Heels was such a full circle moment for me as I had just gotten to see Peppermint play the role on Broadway. When I spoke to her after the show and told her I would be carrying her torch there was a passing of the torch moment that I’ll treasure always. You know all it takes is just one person to to give you the opportunity to be authentic. When I was cast in Rent at Actors Express I was called back for Angel. I didn’t get the role but was offered an ensemble track where I was able to play both male and female roles and I feel like that opened so many doors for me. The next show I did Little Shop Of Horrors I played Ronette. A role where I got to be a woman on stage, no jokes, no reveals, not a man in a dress. A woman. After that people got on board with my gender expression in my art and BAM here I am today. Be you! Everyone else will adjust!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh well we’d definitely go to The Original Pancake house for breakfast because I think pancakes are my favorite food ever lol! For lunch or dinner we’d go to Wonderkid! I love the hip 70’s aesthetic and the music! Not to mention their cocktails program is literally to die for! Lastly we’d go to Mary’s for karaoke and dancing! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh god there are so many people! Firstly without the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunities that I have! We did so many pieces of meaningful choral theatre! It really helped me hone my acting, conquer stage fright, and introduced me so many wonderful people. Secondly I have to give thanks to Freddie Ashley who is a visionary and cast me in my first production and gave me so many wonderful gender non specific opportunities. He picked up on what I wanted to present long before I had the vocabulary to say it myself. Lastly I need to thank my partner Nicholas who continuously keeps me grounded and is my biggest cheerleader.
