We had the good fortune of connecting with Travon Merritt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Travon, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic/creative career simply because I see it as a way to living a “free life.” It’s a career where any idea I have in my head I can make it into a reality. Anything is possible in a creative career and the only thing that could possibly hold me back from creating what I want is myself. Being in an artistic/creative career is about being in a career of expression. I can express my life experiences and thoughts into a project of mine. Anything I create can go on to last lifetime and as a result because of my artistic/creative career I can go on to live forever through my work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What makes my art so different is that I have my own distinct style that screams me. I’ve always been big on cartoons, games, and all nerdy type of entertainment, so as a result I’ve been able to add those type of elements into my art to make it my own. The goal I had for myself is that when people see my work I want them to feel like they’re in a cartoon or a surreal psychedelic realm. The journey to curating my own style wasn’t easy, it took a lot of trial and error. I would be outside shooting almost every day just having fun with the intent of trying to get better. I was hungry for it to the point where I could only think about creating/shooting. Along the way the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far is for one if you want to be better you have put the time and work into it now or you won’t see the progress you hope to see. Two, don’t sit on any ideas just go out and do them as soon as you can. Three, never give up because you never know when your time for success may come. Four, be original as possible! Your life is different from everyone else’s, we all share our own unique experiences so as a result try and put your own experiences into your art and watch your own style develop into something beautiful and unique.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When you come to Jersey City all I can really say is you would just have to explore and get a taste of it yourself. It’s a lot to experience and do as a first timer but as cool as Jersey city is you have to take advantage of the fact that we are literally a 10-20 min train ride away from NYC. That’s a whole different jungle to explore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to my friends who keep the creative fire sparked! @mcfleezus_ @arnoldstapes @tripzy_ @shotbyjaah These people are one of the many reasons why I keep going and why I do what I do. We keep each other afloat and sane while coming up in the creative industry.
