We had the good fortune of connecting with Travis Patton Sr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Travis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
While beginning my podcast, I wanted to present a platform where individuals who felt they had no place for their voices to be heard to be brought to the light. It is important to me that individuals who feel undeserving, left out, hurting and bypassed because of life’s different experiences are presented with a safe and practical place to talk and grow.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am passionate about people. I believe that each person has something uniquely special about them. We all are brought into this world by the same means, but the decisions we make along the way makes us individuals. I’ve had to overcome just as many obstacles as others. My story really began at birth. I was born with a hole in my heart that did not close. As a result of this unfortunate medical condition I remained in the hospital for the first 3-4 years of my life in a plastic bubble. Can you imagine being a child with enough tubes connected to you like an automobile? The doctor’s at the time told my mother and my grandmother that I might not enjoy a high quality of life. Well, if you tell me I can’t do something, I will certainly try to prove you wrong. I played football, ran track and did all the things children enjoy doing. My childhood was riddled with inconsistencies, drugs and alcohol abuse and all the displacements and disruptions a child can stand. I learned early on through watching others suffer at the hand of drug use, that it was not something I wanted. What I would like the world to know is, difficulties happen to each of us. And sometimes things don’t always end up in the way we would like, but if we really want to change how our story is going all we have to do is turn to the next page.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If anyone knows me I am a big foodie lol. I would have to begin with a ball game. If it’s Springtime we would visit Protective Stadium and catch the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL play a really good game. After the game, nothing is better than some great BBQ at Dreamland BBQ on the Southside.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Nicole, is the biggest supporter and best cheerleader I have. My story is a mixture of all those that hold individual importance in my life. First I would say my mother. She taught me that even in the face of overwhelming personal challenges I can persevere. There is no way I can even begin to thank people in my life without mentioning my grandmother Ella Jemison. She was a rock and pillar for most of my life. Most of my life’s lessons come from the day to day lessons she taught me. Just as I grew, my perspectives on life became challenged and required a more robust boost. I’m grateful to have had my God Father, the late Bishop Ervin Williams in my life as well as his wife serving as a surrogate mother to me after the death of my mother. You know, they say that we meet people for a reason. Well, Apostle Stephen A Davis who serves as pastor of Refresh Family Church has certainly been someone I am happy to have met.
