We had the good fortune of connecting with Toya K and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was passionate about starting my own business because I wanted to create something innovative and impactful. My vision was to solve problems and fill gaps in the market by introducing a concept that’s unique and unheard of. Specifically, I aimed to build a solution-based hair company that goes beyond simply selling products—one that addresses real needs and delivers meaningful results for its customers.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets Lush XXI apart from other hair companies is our unique quality. We took two origins textures and combined them to create our #1 product seller; Siamese Collection. Our excitement is currently anticipating the global awareness of our hair care extension line Bundle Reviver. Our formula is the insurance for hair investments. It took us 3 years working with an engineer overseas to develop a hair product that delays the negative progression of hair extensions by reviving the hair strands with each process. This allows customers to save money and enjoy their hair investments longer.
Perseverance and analytics helped with our growth. Entrepreneurship isn’t an easy journey. You must grow with your business. Paying attention to the needs of your company and utilizing its capabilities can stretch the company’s potential. I didn’t see my company as a thing. I saw it as apart of myself. What I overcame personally on the outside, reflected on the inside of my business. Some challenges in business aren’t always the business. Sometimes it’s the creator needing positive adjustment.
I’ve learned so much along the way. One that sticks out to me the most is knowing when to roll with the punches and when to punch back. Of course not literally but figuratively. Business takes wisdom and strength and you must know the battle you’re facing and how to conquer it with integrity still intact.
Id like the world to know that no matter how hard I’ve worked, who I paid to mentor me or had the best idea of something. Nothing worked as well as when I prayed and I asked for guidance.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my shout out to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without His Grace over my business, I’m not sure where I’d be but I know I wouldn’t be this far. All praises to Him for the strength and unlimited wisdom he provides for me to operate a successful business. Secondly, big shoutout to my three daughters. They’re my drive in my motivation and determination to get the impossible done. They’ve had to hold the house down while I worked crazy hours or help me late night to make wigs. The sacrifice was made as a family not just by myself. I appreciate them so much for understanding or trying to at least. Lastly, I’m grateful for everyone that’s helped build my business by working at my salon. A special shoutout goes to Tenisha Coleman aka Tiny. She’s stuck with me through some great times and really hard times and literally from the beginning. She’s taught me a lot about myself as an owner… even if I didn’t like it but it’s helped me grow better. I’d have to dedicate my awareness of how needed grace is for others to her. In business, we are taught to hire slow and fire fast but Tiny taught me if I want to continue being a leader then I must know when to extend grace because building an empire will require patience from those putting up the building blocks. I didn’t get it at first but I do now.
