We had the good fortune of connecting with Tormund and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tormund, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’m not sure it was ever a choice. Most musicians will tell you that it’s a connection to the music — a passion. Even for those who do not follow it as a career, it remains a hobby. I’m fortunate enough to have a full-time career as an audio engineer and those skills can be applied laterally to my passion of music production. How I ended up here is a matter of dedication, determination, practice, and obsession. Creating art is an itch. I’ve spent most of my life trying to scratch that itch and continue to every day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I operate in a niche corner of electronic/dance music. Jungle, born from London raves 30 years ago, is seeing a revival globally. The genre has grown and evolved in that time to include Drum ‘n’ Bass and more. Certain factors such as production gear used and sources of samples help define Jungle from contemporary dance genres. The recent revival combines these vintage techniques and soundscapes with modern production value and equipment. The limited scope of niche genres can be a hot bed for creative output. While challenging, seeking new ideas in a well-tread format can spawn originality and personal style. With years of experience, I’ve overcome this challenge and adopted a personal style unique to my own productions. This was accomplished through trial and error, as well as community feedback. The greatest step I ever took was becoming involved in community and growing my own art with the guidance and help of other creative and talented producers. Tormund, as a brand, exists to spread the joy of music, of dancing, and furthering of creative Jungle production.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a recent transplant to Atlanta, myself. Some of my frequent spots are Monday Night Brewing and Battle ‘n’ Brew. There is so much culture along the Beltline, so that is a must-visit. I’ve been trying to collect BBQ spots like infinity stones – shout out to Fat Mat’s, Fox Bros, Pig’n’Chick. If my friend is in town, you would catch us at a Braves game, for sure. Lastly, a shout out to The Masquerade, Torch D’n’B, and MJLee for keeping the Jungle/Drum’n’Bass scene growing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Community is the cornerstone of music and culture. For me, that community is Jungle Fatigue. Founded by Sawteeth in Seoul, South Korea. I’ve made great friends and collaborators from this supportive, growing, and encouraging collection of like-minded producers.
