We had the good fortune of connecting with Toquetta Christian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Toquetta, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Other than deciding to work for myself the single most important decision I ever made that contributed to my success was the fact that I wasn’t afraid to bet on myself. GODfidence at its finest.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a salon owner I wanted to create a space that promotes professional healthy hair services in a calming relaxed environment with good vibes. As master cosmetologist I specialize in creative cuts and color. specifically blonding and short pixie cuts.

I got where I am today professionally by being consistent, discipline and never sacrificing quality or integrity. When it comes to your brand and business, always sweat the small stuff. Details matter, it’s what sets you apart.

The best lesson Ive learned to date is to create a team to help you and your business elevate to the next level. Learn the art of implementation and delegation. You can’t do everything by yourself.

I want the world to know that there are no glass ceilings that can’t be broken! As a teen mom with a successful beauty business it can be done. When it comes to short hair and blonding, I’m your go to. When it comes to quality services and top notch customer care, I’m your girl.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Cali. We would have a beach front Airbnb at Venice beach. Have authentic Ramen for lunch. Go to the farmers market in LA. And watch the sunset at the beach. Catch a Ferris Wheel ride and walk the strip. Go to a concert. I love Cali.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, God. I give him all the glory and honor. His promises endures forever!!

And I will always shout out my mama. Angela Davis. I’m forever grateful for her. My mom took her last $2500 and signed me up for cosmetology school. I remember not having a car at that time and the school was about 25 minutes away. I was kind of hesitant because you know I didn’t have a car, my mother looked me in my face and said, “you’re not waiting, you know this is what you wanna do and you’re going to do it. So you better make sure you get to that school”. Hell or high water I sure I got there!! Lol

Then there’s my late grandmother Edna! Her support and love. I’m a teen parent, and the way my grandmother graced me and my son while on my journey navigating cosmetology school, career, motherhood and just life, is priceless. Plus she let me do hair in her kitchen, I had anywhere from 4-5 classmates lined up in her living room waiting to get their hair done. I’m forever grateful.

My two babies! They’ve been on this life roller coaster with me %100. Late nights and early mornings of entrepreneurship. I became a mom at 17, so.. it was no longer only about me. My first son I’terrius created an even more ambitious drive to be greater and do things I never thought I could do. There was no looking back. My second son I’ Kel, he’s a true entrepreneur at heart. Low key my manager lol, we’re always bouncing around business ideas. He encourages me to keep dreaming big!

I’m grateful for My pops “Busta” , my uncle “Winky”, friends, clients and industry colleagues that has poured into me and have supported me along the way.
