We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonya Caver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tonya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Every single time I apply for credentials as a freelance photographer there is always the risk of denial, but I never let the no’s deter my efforts. Also, risk taking is evident with every new concept. Sometimes clients tilt their heads sideways and say, “Huh? You want do what ?” And I’m always telling them to trust me. If it feels weird it’s magic happening.
 

What should our readers know about your business?
My photography business is located in the DC/Baltimore area. I specialize in studio, concert and creative photography. I’m a self-taught creative and have been capturing greatness for four years now. I got to where I am today by determination and perseverance. This road was not easy. Unfortunately, in the creative world there is a lot of gatekeeping which forces you to push pass the naysayers and figure things out on your own. I overcame the negativity by using it as fuel to keep pushing. For every closed door I sought out two open ones. A lesson I learned along the way is don’t be afraid to network. You never know where the next conversation can take you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d have to hit up Ben’s Chilli Bowl first. Can’t say you’ve been to DC without a half smoke from Ben’s. Next we’d check out the African American Museum and take in a little culture before turning up. Rosebar or Barcode for a party scene. Done other great eats are Oohs and Aahs, Swahili Village and Kitchen Cray. Finally catch a Nationals baseball game before going to live go-go. What’s DC without a good go-go?
