We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonya Barbee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tonya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I see risks as challenging, but cannot be avoided if you want to progress in life. I had to make decisions to stay or move on? If I stay, things will undoubtedly be the same, however, if I chose to move on, what then? Sometimes that “what then?” is worth taking the risk for. Risks are part of life and I’ve witnessed many advantages resulting from risks.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the founder of I am Still a Rose, LLC. What we do is inspire women and men alike to move beyond the place of hurt from bad relationships to a place of blossoming to be the best version of themselves, the rose, being inspired to love, forgive and win! They become ready and able to accomplish their goals and mission in their lives through empowering events, products, and quality services. Nothing stands in their way, no obstacle, because they know they are the rose!

After being in four failed marriages and a mental breakdown, I felt, if I’m going through all of this hurt, I bet there are others that are as well. I considered what can I do if I’m broken myself. Nothing. So I spent quality time learning to heal the pain, the brokenness and defeat. I worked on myself, resulting in me being able to help others through their pain. My story, helping others with their story.

Getting here has been a amazing! Trial and error daily. Always learning and always growing. I’ve met some awesome men and women.

We have two brands now: I am still a rose (women’s apparel, events, books, services) and the black rose for men (apparel, more coming soon)!

My goal is for the roses (the ladies) to replace “Girl, I’m hanging in there to “Girl, I’m still a rose, in spite of it all!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This has got to be a visual during the pandemic. Many of my favorite places are no longer the same. But let’s go there: The Grill at SW waterfront, light seafood dish. Then we would walk on the waterfront and go shopping to nearby stores, on the water. Take a cruise on the Spirit of Washington or the Odyssey, dance the night away with some light cocktails while meeting some feet like minded people (hopefully). 🙂 Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Doris Tatum (Mother) The Rose Garden (Group)
Mike Mann (Mentor)
