We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonia Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tonia Marie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business was a journey I’ve always dreamed of. I’ve had a passion for visual storytelling ever since I could hold a pencil. It’s been a ride filled with countless sketches, late-night bursts of inspiration, and the joy of bringing ideas to life in a visually captivating way.

Over the past 23 years, I’ve fine-tuned my skills, pouring my heart into crafting designs that not only look great but also leave a lasting mark. About 10 years ago, it felt like the natural next step was to channel all that creativity into something tangible. So, fueled by my love for disc golf, I took the plunge and started Double Par Designs. Fun fact: the name actually came to my husband during a round of disc golf in Norman, OK. We were out on the course, playing with some folks from a local club, Malice N Chains, when it just clicked!

Initially, we focused on designing women’s apparel, but over time, our scope expanded. From hot stamps and logos to tournament flyers, banners, and everything you need to boost your social media game, I’ve been on a mission to infuse the spirit of disc golf into everything I create. It’s been an incredible journey, blending my passion for design with my love for the sport, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

In addition to our design work, for eight years, we’ve proudly hosted “Birdies for Boobies,” a breast cancer charity disc golf tournament. This event has become our biggest fundraiser, drawing over 100 teams each year. 100% of the proceeds go to Tenaciously Teal, a local organization providing Cancer Care Packs and assistance to those in need. This initiative embodies our commitment to giving back to the community while celebrating our love for disc golf and design.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career journey has been a winding road filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours, but it’s these experiences that have shaped me into the professional I am today. Armed with an associate in crime victim services and another in graphic design, I entered the workforce with a passion for both helping others and visually telling stories. I also stopped along the way to get a bachelor’s in emergency responder administration. Over the years, I’ve delved into various roles within marketing and graphic design, accumulating over two decades of experience in the field. I’ve also dedicated five of those years to working in Victim Services, further deepening my understanding of compassion and support in times of need.

However, amidst professional achievements, my personal life was rocked by unimaginable tragedy. In March of 2017, I endured the heartbreaking loss of my daughter, Ashlyn, and granddaughter, Sally Rose. The pain was immeasurable, but through the darkness, I found strength. Their memory became my driving force, pushing me to persevere in both my personal and professional pursuits.

I am most proud of my unwavering determination to never give up, even in the face of adversity. It’s this resilience that sets me apart from others. Every challenge I’ve encountered, from navigating the complexities of grief to overcoming professional obstacles, has only fueled my desire to succeed.

Currently, as I pursue my master’s in strategic communications and digital strategy, I reflect on the lessons learned along the way. I’ve learned the importance of resilience, empathy, and the power of storytelling. My journey is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for growth and transformation.

Through it all, I want the world to know that my brand and story are defined by perseverance, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I am not just a graphic designer or marketer; I am a survivor, a storyteller, and a beacon of hope for those facing their own trials. My journey is a reminder that no matter how dark the night may seem, there is always light on the horizon for those who dare to chase it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Oklahoma City for a week, I’d plan an unforgettable itinerary blending outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, and culinary delights. We’d start with a round of disc golf at the Noble Disc Golf Course in Noble, OK, followed by exploring other great courses like Dolese Park in Oklahoma City and NE Lions in Norman. For lunch, we’d head to Don Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant to savor some delicious tacos and margaritas.

In between disc golf rounds, we’d take breaks at Starbuck’s for a coffee fix and stop by Sandalwood and Sage in Norman for some crystal shopping. For relaxation, we’d spend time at Lake Overholser, reminiscing and enjoying the serene surroundings.

Throughout the week, we’d mix in cultural experiences like visiting the Farmers Market at Scissortail Park, exploring the vibrant streets of Norman, and connecting with the local disc golf community in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. We’d end each day with a memorable meal at one of the area’s fantastic eateries and maybe catch a sunset or live music performance. It’d be a week my best friend would never forget.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe a significant portion of my success to my partner in life, Jay. His unwavering support, endless encouragement, and brilliant ideas have been instrumental in fueling my journey as a graphic designer and entrepreneur. Jay’s belief in my abilities, coupled with his invaluable input, have propelled Double Par Designs to new heights. Whether it was brainstorming new concepts during late-night disc golf rounds or providing a steady hand through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, Jay has been my rock and my inspiration. I am forever grateful for his presence in my life and the integral role he plays in our shared success.
