We had the good fortune of connecting with Toni Esther and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toni, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Music was always a form of therapy for me. To be honest, I couldn’t afford therapy, so I wrote down my thoughts. I grew up in the church, so the musical influence was always there. My father sung. Some would also tell me that it’s in me. Everyone use to tell me, “You’re anointed”, but what I’ve realized is “anointing” is beyond the church. I began this musical journey to inspire others to be them best selves. Only you can define that. That’s the overall message.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a proud artist, but I recently graduated from Graduate school. My major was counseling, so it would be very efficient to include those aspects into my music. There were times when I felt like quitting it all, music, school, life period, but all those setbacks have allowed me to grow and encourage others to keep going. I work hard. I attend events, open mics, engaging with people to let them know I’m still human. People may see the mic and think you’re invincible, but in reality, artists go through so much more than you could even imagine. I use music as an outlet. I’m blessed with a gift to bless others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to my granny house in the country. Biscuits SLAP, trust me. I’m from Carolina, so I would surely take them to an independent music event. I feel as though independent artist are so much different. The story is authentic. I would definitely take them to experience the music world of Carolina. See a few producers and artists that could tell their stories. I usually go to my friend, Airbourne Audio, to learn from another’s perspective and also get a talk. It’s VERY important to surround yourself with those who are like minded and willing to go further.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my mother who has encouraged me every step of the way. My mother has encouraged me to be my own predecessor. Lifted when me I needed most, for that, I am forever indebted.
