We had the good fortune of connecting with Tk Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tk, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a child growing up in Florida living with my grandmother, who was a chef/Caterer and CEO-Owner of “Mae’s Kitchen LLC,” I was raised in the kitchen watching her make just about everything from scratch without measuring tools. They were not just your ordinary household dishes, but meals made from love and past traditions. I began to memorize, and store the recipes that she created, and instilled into me to keep her traditions alive. That is where my true passion for cooking started to grow.
I became a mother at the ages of 17 & 19, and my daughters gave me a desire to want more and to start a new beginning in life. Graduating with a full ride scholarship I was able to relocate to the Metro Atlanta area and pursue my career path in both the medical and law field. I had to grow up at such a young age and become a provider, mother, student, teacher, worker and more. Throughout the obstacles and challenges life threw at me, I was still able to surpass the trials and tribulations.
Growing up with lots of male siblings, I became very competitive with my life and career path. I started to teach myself how to do just about everything that was essential and nonessential for a life. Though I had two daughters and was on a budget, I did so with great enthusiasm. Over the years, I’ve mastered how to survive and create memorable moments with my family along the way.
I started to educate myself in different trades or skills in which I could accumulate revenue to fund my passion for cooking which became endless and insatiable. I started to become a little obsessed with learning different techniques on all aspects of life, which garnered me the nickname “The Jill of All Trades”.
While attending college I started doing my classmates hair after school or during our study session and it only took me a few months for my name and services to start buzzing around campus. I started to gain more clients daily. After a few years of being in the hair business I was offered an opportunity to work in a salon called “A’ Miracles Stylon” located in Cartersville, GA where Kimberly Watkins McClinin was the CEO/Owner. She gave me not only the opportunity, but a platform to move forward in the salon industry which led me to operate a salon of my own.
As I progressed, I began gaining lots of very supportive clients, family and friends along the way. I took a leap of faith and created “Sumthin’ Different Kitchen, LLC” with my partner and children. Using my grandma’s recipes with a splash of Jamaican Caribbean Cuisine, we have been able to create unparalleled soul food dishes that bring our diner’s joyous and memorable experiences through food that won’t be easily forgotten.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Negril, Jamaica. The hot springs are a breathe taking experience you can’t imagine. It’s so many magical places in Jamaica that are underrated and undocumented. Joseph’s cave is a must visit. Jamaican Street Food is always a go to. SE10 9HT. Everything is delicious. Check out Jeff the Chef on SW9 8PA great food and experience. Jamaicans are very traditional and exciting, it’s a lesson in every aspect of life. I love the difference culture, foods, spices and lessons they teach and offer to the world.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Growing up without a mother I was giving four. My Grandma Alice Epps whom installed all of her recipes and love into me. Kimberly Waltkins she believed in me when no one else would and gave me a chance. Belinda Cooley she treates me and my kids as if we belong to her. And lastly Carolyn Eberhart she uplift and pray for me in ways I cannot imagine.
