We had the good fortune of connecting with Tionne Chanel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tionne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly I’ve always loved having my hair done but having to buy weave plus get someone to do your hair definitely starts to add up. Being in college with no job I eventually had to learn how to be budget friendly so I went to YouTube and kept watching videos until I felt confident enough to finally try on my own. I started off hand making wigs for myself, I now use a sewing machine, and eventually my friends and older sister started to ask me to make wigs for them as well and that definitely gave me the practice that I needed before starting a real business. I decided to join the hair business because I wanted to try to reach people around my age like college students and emphasize that you can still have great quality hair and great quality wigs BUT you don’t have to break the bank to obtain it. I feel like everyone should have access to luxuries in life so I just want to help make what I consider luxury (weaves and wigs) more obtainable for those who feel as if they cannot afford it or may be out of their budget.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My name is Tionne Chanel and the name of my business is Chanel Luxe Hair with the reason being that I started this journey because I am a lover of all things luxurious but still affordable. I have not been in the hair business for long but I’ve definitely had more success than I even knew to plan for. For me honestly it’s about providing customers with great hair and great wigs but still for a reasonable price and I feel like that is the main thing that sets me apart from others. Simply making money isn’t my biggest goal right now but instead to help others be able to save money. I love the feeling I get when customers send me pictures of them wearing my work, it makes me feel like they are smiling and happy because of me and something that I did! Like being able to know that I helped someone’s prom or vacation, or birthday look come together really brings me joy. With not even having my business officially launched for a whole year there are a lot of things that I’m still learning and still have to learn. I can say that the most important thing I’ve learned so far is to NEVER doubt myself because even if I’m not actually seeing the progress and success that I want for myself happen at a certain moment there is always something working behind closed doors for me. I am very excited to see what the future holds for me and my business and for the people that I get to help give a true LUXE experience to. I have big dreams and I plan to accomplish them one wig at a time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Yikess my best friend would be upset because I am not an outside person at all. I love to be inside really. I’m not from Huntsville so I still feel like I don’t know where everything is here so we would just be exploring together. The only definite place I can say is Stars and Strikes because I love to bowl and play laser tag.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely have to give credit to my best friend Alexis and my older sister Trijon. After they saw that I was experimenting with making wigs they literally let me make every wig for them from that point even up until now. If I did not have their support of letting me practice my skills I doubt that I would even have the confidence that I have now to showcase my work. Even my non-wig wearing friends are very supportive and encouraging of me. The simple things such as reposting my work and referring potential customers my way means the absolute world to me! If I ever doubt myself for a second my friends are always there to give me that extra support and encouragement that I need to keep going and that push to really believe in myself. And of course I can’t forget about my parents. Even though they don’t know much about the hair business and hair life they always make sure to support me and tell me how proud they are of me. insert *heart emoji*
