We had the good fortune of connecting with Timothy Joe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Timothy, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up in the rural town of Greensboro, Alabama. The culture in my upbringing was to love God, family, and stewardship. Growing up there wasn’t much to do, but play outside which was great for me. Now that I am adult, I have an abundant appreciation of the beauty present from the cow pastures to the abandoned buildings.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is deeply rooted in nostalgia. I love decaying structures, old personal items, and land that has a history. I want to connect my art with a memory. In 2015, I started seeing glimpses of my artistic voice and motivation. Growing up I painted because I was good at it, but didn’t have a theme or message with the art. I spent almost 5 years writing my artist statement. Putting in words what comes natural to me about the “why” I paint. I had to ask myself many questions on why I do paint this and not that. I even took an inventory of my artwork and looking for patterns. I discovered my art is designed to spark memories and dialog about the past.
I want the world to know there is hidden beauty all around and to pay attention to the small things because one day it will be gone.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will take my friend my family’s Black Angus farm to get a taste of country life. We would get on the tractor pulled trailer and tour the land. My friend can bird watch, feed the cows, hike in the woods, or pick fresh produce. I can share stories about the land and the people that used to live in the area. There are restaurants in the town nearby and then get a slice of my mom’s pound cake. It was the perfect get away from all the noise on social media and large crowds of people.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Connecting to Birds and Nature Tours LLC founded by my younger brother at the Joe Farm would be a great story. We provide a safe place for people of all races, age, disability, and various background. The Joe Farm rest on 200 acres of land from wooded area, open pastures, and streams.
