Meet Timothy Cunningham: Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Timothy Cunningham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Timothy, how do you think about risk?
Bravery has always proven to be a key asset in my career, however, risk taking has opened way more doors than just bravery. This more recent characteristic adoption has proven to be a winning tactic once research and whiteboarding has been done.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Nothing about my artwork itself sets me apart from others. There’s plenty of artists who paint realism very well such as myself. If there’s anything that makes each painting different, then it’s the time period and obstacles the artist had to endure throughout the creation of the piece. This changes with every piece of work. I began painting at 15, and began as a commissioned artist at 16 with murals and portraits. After serving in the USMC, I earned an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, and found myself stuck in that field paying bills. All the while, I never stopped with teaching art classes, showcasing in major cities, online art sales, and knocking out every commission I could. We whiteboarded and put into action the steps needed to get me away from engineering, and full time into the arts as I’ve dreamt of my whole life. Stepping in plenty of potholes in the art business, I’ve found my place in the world of art for the time being. I see growth coming, and can’t say what the landscape will look like moving on, but I’ve arrived.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Here in Greenville? We have one of the best “little” cities the live in. Nested between ATL and CLT, we are very transit. That means most Gville people are transplants here chasing the bag, the dreams, or stepping into their new self in a city where young eclectics are the backbone of small business. I’d begin with our famous downtown district hitting several breweries throughout the daytime hours. Tasting all the local brews while watching the young professionals network on “their” takeover. We’d walk off the beer downtown over the liberty bridge at falls park viewing all of the murals and local artwork displayed in and out doors, stopping by the local business that we ourselves frequent to say hello and show love. As the evening falls in, we’d enjoy dinner and laughs at one of many rooftop restaurants and bars in the city, watching the sunset and plotting on what to sight see tomorrow. Late nights belong the cigar lounges and night clubs downtown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, my wife Marissa, for opening my eyes to true entrepreneurship. Chalene Johnson, with Team Johnson, for providing the blueprint and showing the way. Lastly, every person and situation in the corporate world that clearly told me I didn’t belong there in several ways.
