Meet Tiku “Mello” Fisher | Digital Media Producer, VFX Producer & Outsourcing Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiku “Mello” Fisher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiku “Mello”, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, with Jamaican heritage, my upbringing has been shaped by resilience and self-reliance. Growing up in a single-parent household, I learned early on the power of personal initiative encapsulated in ten words, “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
Navigating the complexities of childhood, I encountered the harsh realities of racism, a formidable adversary that would persist into adulthood. Yet, amid these challenges, I discovered solace and sanctuary in art. Art became my refuge, a sanctuary where the tumult of the world could be transmuted into strokes of creativity. From the age of five, I used pencils and brushes as tools of empowerment, combating anxiety and depression with each stroke.
My nomadic upbringing, marked by frequent relocations, granted me a unique perspective on humanity. Each move offered insights into the diverse tapestry of human thought, sparking a lifelong curiosity and propensity for questioning the status quo. In the kaleidoscope of shifting landscapes, I found my voice as an artist, drawing inspiration from the rich mosaic of cultures and experiences that surrounded me.
Despite the odds stacked against me, I pursued my passion for art with unwavering determination and charted my own course, fueled by an unyielding belief in my abilities. Balancing the demands of academia with the responsibilities of adulthood, I embarked on a relentless pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement.
With each milestone achieved, from studying photography at my place of work, Japan Camera, to completing courses in Advertising and Computer Graphics, I refused to be confined by the limitations of circumstance. Instead, I seized every opportunity to translate theory into practice, transforming classrooms into laboratories of innovation.
Juggling academic pursuits with familial responsibilities, I embraced the ethos of hard work and perseverance. My journey into the realm of education was serendipitous yet transformative. From humble beginnings as a teacher’s assistant, I ascended the ranks to become the youngest educator in my school, teaching across multiple departments and colleges. Simultaneously, I honed my skills as a filmmaker, collaborating on short films and leveraging my expertise in behind-the-scenes photography and production.
As one chapter closed, another beckoned, propelling me into the dynamic realm of post-production. Through grit and resilience, I seized an opportunity that would catapult my career to new heights, working on acclaimed films and series such as Black Panther, The Mandalorian, and Indiana Jones.
Reflecting on my journey thus far, I am humbled by the realization that greatness often lies beyond the confines of comfort. In the face of uncertainty, I have learned to embrace the unknown, for it is in the cup of uncertainty that true potential is forged. As I continue to chart my course through the ever-changing currents of life, I remain steadfast in my belief that the best time to seize opportunity is when doubt looms largest. For in the cup of uncertainty, greatness awaits those bold enough to seize it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey in the film industry has been both rewarding and challenging, defined by perseverance and a relentless pursuit of success. As the sole black male in production departments, I faced unique obstacles, but these experiences have only fortified my determination.
A significant hurdle was the scarcity of mentorship and formal training within my roles. However, I seized each opportunity to learn and grow, relying on my creativity and resourcefulness to navigate production complexities. Through sheer determination, I overcame these challenges, carving a niche in an industry often lacking diversity.
What sets me apart is not only thriving in demanding environments but also my commitment to breaking barriers. I’ve embraced challenges as chances for growth, refusing to be defined by limitations.
I’m proud of my adaptability and excellence in diverse industry roles, contributing to over 30 films and series. From behind-the-scenes photography to post-production, my versatility brings cinematic visions to life.
Now, co-directing and co-producing my first documentary short film is a testament to years of dedication. It reflects my commitment to storytelling and perseverance through adversity.
My journey taught me resilience, creativity, and the importance of representation in media. I aim to inspire others to pursue their dreams relentlessly, regardless of background. As I continue in the industry, I hope to blaze trails and encourage others to embrace their journey.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For an unforgettable week-long adventure in the area, I’d start by immersing my best friend in Toronto’s rich cultural tapestry. We’d embark on a journey through history with visits to iconic landmarks, followed by an evening of enlightenment at Soul Pepper Theatre, where the captivating play by Inua Ellams, “Three Sisters” awaits. And of course, no visit would be complete without experiencing the vibrant energy of Caribana Festival 2024, celebrating the diversity and spirit of Caribbean culture.
When it comes to dining, we’d indulge in a culinary odyssey starting at Boukan Restaurant, savoring the flavors of authentic Haitian cuisine. Our taste buds would then be treated to the bold and savory delights of Jamaican fare at Chubby’s and Miss Likklemore’s, two culinary gems that never disappoint.
And for a dose of adrenaline-fueled excitement, we’d catch a Toronto Raptors basketball game, immersing ourselves in the electrifying atmosphere of live sports. From cultural exploration to culinary delights and thrilling entertainment, this itinerary promises an unforgettable experience that showcases the best of what the area has to offer.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe a debt of gratitude to two remarkable individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping my journey: my mother, Grace Mitchell, and Dudley Laws, a Canadian civil rights activist and the executive director of the Black Action Defence Committee.
First and foremost, my mother, Grace Mitchell, has been my guiding light and unwavering source of support. Despite the challenges we faced in our single-parent household, her strength and resilience taught me the value of perseverance and self-reliance. Her love and encouragement fueled my determination to pursue my passions, laying the foundation for my journey to success.
Additionally, I am deeply indebted to Dudley Laws, whose tireless advocacy for racial equality has inspired generations. His fearless commitment to justice and empowerment has served as a beacon of hope in the face of adversity. Through his example, I learned the importance of standing up for what is right and amplifying the voices of the marginalized.
To these extraordinary individuals, and to all those who have contributed to my journey, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Their support, mentorship, and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping the person I am today, and for that, I am truly humbled and grateful.
