We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiara Holloway- Wilkerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I honestly didn’t have a thought process behind starting my business. I was doing this as fun, as my passion. I never saw it has a business. People were reaching out to me to help them with their homes but I didn’t have a business yet. It was just the love for décor and designing a space for me. When, it was time to get my business name and license it took me 6 months because I was so nervous. Since, I’ve taken that leap of faith God has open doors for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My interior design career has had it’s up and downs just like any other business. Covid hit and I didn’t know which way to turned. My focus was to work on my branding and align my business correctly. As an Interior Designer you are %75-%85 hands on with your clients. Covid changed all that and helped me create the virtual design package for my clients. What sets me apart from others is aesthetic for design and using unique patterns, textures and colors to present to my client the Black Sophisticated design. Each design project I create I try to add in a touch of black. I am very proud of myself for not giving up on me! I’m proud of myself for creating spaces that were a blank canvas and I took a client vision and made it their reality.
I have continue to stay consist to get to where I am professionally. I work hard. I stay humble. But, I have not and will not give up. Heck No it has not been easy! I have had my days when an idea didn’t work or furniture was broke or damage or a client just wasn’t happy.
Lessons learned put as much information in your contract and It’s ok to Say No. All clients are not good clients. Period!
I am your Black Sophisticated Interior Designer who loves to create and bring your vision to life. My gift has become my passion, My passion has become my dream career. It doesn’t feel like work. It’s so much and I love for my clients to have a surprise at the end of the project. It has warmed my heart to see them cry or see them just become so emotionally when they see the finally outcome of the space. This is why I do this! It has meaning to me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First Stop Daily Menu Cohiba Room- Why? I designed and decorated this spot. The food is awesome and the brunch on Sundays morning are Everything!
We woud do District Wharf in Washington DC. We have to check out Pendry Washington DC – The Wharf.
We have to dine and eat the most talked about food in the city.
We have to check out the HOF rooftop and Common House. If you are coming to Richmond, VA the Common House has the best drinks and spicy wings.
My favorite spot to go eat breakfast is Bar Solita.
Virginia has a lot of history. A lot of historic landmarks and rivers. We would go by the James River to relax and walk the trails and hike.
Take a trip to the New Kent Winery. Who doesn’t like a good glass of wine.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Starting my business my daddy was right there with me. He was the one telling me to charge these people. Helping me pick out nice furniture and knowing the differences between cheap and good quality of furniture. When I finally booked my first real design job he would help me delivery the furniture or clean-up the space. My daddy was my go to guy and support. Three years ago he closed his eyes but I know he is smiling down from heaven look at his babygirl. So, my projects and my signature is called Black Sophisticated dedicated to my daddy- Richard Holloway Jr. My mother- Thelma Holloway, My husband- Ricky Wilkerson Jr, my son – Elisha and my contractor – Deaunta Calvin. I know I drive them crazy at times but I couldn’t do a lot of this without you all.
