We had the good fortune of connecting with Tia Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tia, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?

The most important thing I’ve done as a parent is teach my children how to be themselves, trust their inner voice, and pursue their passions. I am the mother of three (two adult children and a toddler). My son is a college graduate (SCAD), living his life as a creative and entrepreneur. My daughter is a creative and student (CAU), pursuing her passions in the music and entertainment business. My youngest daughter is thriving in her “mommy daycare”, keeping my husband and I very busy.

When my two oldest kids were adolescents, my husband and I taught them that their job should be doing what they love. We nurtured their interests and reminded them that they were capable of achieving greatness. They observed my husband and me create multiple projects and businesses, discovering that one can have a vision and watch it manifest or choose to change course if they prefer something else. Moreover, they learned that God is in everything and everyone, including themselves; therefore, anything is possible.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I am an author and the owner of Tia Adams Tutoring, LLC. I started my tutoring business in 2022, but it’s been a brainchild of mine for much longer. As a Special Education Teacher in public schools, I always believed learning should be educational, nurturing, and fun. I often read my students’ individualized educational programs (IEP) with a focus on their strengths and interests, rather than their deficits, and used them as motivation for my lessons. By using what my students loved to address weaknesses, students were engaged while they addressed learning goals. However, with caseloads of fifteen or more students, I often felt overwhelmed and frustrated. I felt like each child deserved my individual attention but knew that the traditional school system wasn’t an environment that made that possible.

After COVID, the death of my parents, and the birth of my daughter, I desperately needed a change. So, I talked it over with my husband and decided to leave my career in education of 20+ years. For a year, I focused on raising my daughter and writing. Then, I started feeling like I wanted to get back into teaching but not in the traditional setting. Although I was now a stay-at-home mom (SAHM), my love for teaching remained. I wanted to create a program that catered to my new ideals and gave me the flexibility in employment I was looking for.

I began offering online social-emotional classes called “Color Me Calm,” teaching students calming techniques, emotional regulation tools, affirmations, and color therapy through the 7 chakras. However, there weren’t many parents in my network looking for those types of services for their child, so I transitioned to tutoring.

Many parents wanted tutoring, but I knew that traditional tutoring wasn’t a good fit for me. Academics aren’t the only cause of a student’s deficits in school. To ensure students are successful in both school and life, teachers and parents must address their needs in every area. That’s when I decided to become a holistic tutor that incorporates academics, emotional, and spiritual tutoring.

The transition from the traditional school setting to working from home has been such a blessing. The challenges are different with each new endeavor, but when you love what you’re doing, they’re not as draining. I’m reminded that this job is my choice, a reality that I have consciously chosen; therefore, I look at challenges as opportunities for growth to create what I love.

In my tutoring program, I’ve taken all the things I’ve learned from so many amazing educators I’ve encountered (including my mother-in-love), my experiences, and my training and created my own program that includes Personalized Learning Pathways (PLP). I take inventory of the student’s interests and favorites. This information, along with the student’s Cosmic Blueprint (originated by Shaun Adams) and my game-based curriculum, is the basis for instruction. I develop my own unique approach for each student that includes custom games, original songs, and activities to assist students.

Teaching is my passion. I have worked with every grade level and adults. Knowing that something I’ve done, explained, or written has caused someone to grow and look at life differently is my greatest gift to humanity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

If my best friend was visiting the area, I would take them to a variety of places. If they want to do a lot of activities, depending on the time of day they arrive, the first day (and last day) would be spent at my home. This would give them time to adjust from traveling. We would enjoy a lovely meal and relax outside by the fire pit. One of my husband’s many gifts is cooking; he even had a home chef business. So, I am sure my friend would have no complaints.

The following days would include a park, beach, or lake for a nature experience, a museum or cultural event, and shopping. One day would also be set aside for enjoying the nightlife of the city —whether it be dancing or going to a lounge, something along those lines.

However, this itinerary would be fluid and could change at any moment. My husband and I are exceptionally gifted at creating a memorable experiences for anyone we know. So, if the day is saying, “Let’s chill on the porch, eat good food, and talk about life,” then that’s what we’ll do.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people, including my husband Shaun and my kids, to whom I can attribute my success in business and life, and listing them would take forever, literally. I feel like if I know you and you know me, then you deserve a shoutout.

Seriously, all things happen for my benefit, every person, book, song, movie, and every encounter is purposeful and, therefore, meaningful.

But, if you really need a name, feel free to check out my sister, Khristi Lauren Adams. She’s pretty amazing and doing big things these days.
