We had the good fortune of connecting with Thomecia Busby and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thomecia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Oakland, CA. Raised in a Black family home. My parents had three kids and worked REALLY hard to provide everything we needed AND wanted. My grandmother lived with us most of my life and she played a huge part in raising us, ( I often say she inspires me to be a bomb ass grandmother one day ). When I tell you she has SUPPORTED every single decision my siblings and I make! And she NEVER made us feel dumb for any of it !

Neither one of my parents graduated college, however as a child they both worked really hard to get the proper training to start careers they both love. My dad has been a San Francisco Fireman for over 20 years, and my mama became a Licensed Vocational Nurse around the same time.

Even though they had kids early and couldn’t quite turn their childhood hobbies into careers, I have to thank them for allowing my siblings and I the opportunity to find love in our hobbies/interests. (even though in later years it was very hard for them to accept that their college graduates were pursuing creative careers) But seeing our parents fight and work hard to give their children the life they deserved pushed me to fight for my dreams. In return, my own mother has started to fight for her dreams (like most mother’s she invested a lot of time into her family) and pursuing hobbies she couldn’t before! If you ask her she’s a Nurse, Minister, Life Coach, and Comedian all in one. Lol

And Here I am a Professional Dancer/Instructor turned Birthworker! Yes, I am a trained Doula, Labor Support Specialist, or BirthKeeper as I like to call it !

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art has definitely transformed over the years. From choreographing live performances, teaching empowering dance classes, hosting cannabis events, to practicing herbal medicine. I am a do it all kind of person. The aquarius in me is such a rebel and humanitarian at heart. I create magikal space for Black/Brown/Indigenous people to commune, fellowship, and heal together. Rather that’s through dance therapy, cannabis intertwined with art, or my Higher Healing Herbal Remedies. It isn’t always easy being the spiritual unicorn. I exchange energy with my peers and elders guiding them on their spiritual journey to reclaim our ancestral powers.

I’ve experienced racism, depression, sexism, loss of life, haters, + more. The number one thing I learned and always live by DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY. I don’t give af about anyone’s thoughts or feelings, not even my own parents lol. I always, always, always tell people do what tf you wan do! We don’t have a lot of physical time in this realm and I have chosen to live mindfully. Live with a purpose that fulfills my soul.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit me in ATL we would have a turnt ass week. We definitely doing brunch, I mean you can’t come to Atlanta and not do brunch, Breakfast at Barneys is one of faves and The Hive Buckhead is around the corner from my house. I love me some nature and vitamin D from the sun, Piedmont Park, Ponce City Market, and Atlantic Station are some of my usual spots. I got to the park to ground and reconnect, usually with some music, my crystals, a book, cannabis, wine, and close loved ones. Ponce City, I love going to Bar Vegan, walking around the rooftop & grabbing a drink, oh and the plant shop is my fave. Atlantic Station, of course for the shopping, but my partner and I love going to Yard House, and the bowling alley for drinks and arcade fun. I just also love going to anything Black owned. Shops, restaurants, apothecaries, markets, and more. I have to give a shout out to Sevananda Health Market and The Honey Pot Art & Energy shop!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As you grow up, you truly begin to innerstand the importance of, “it takes a village”. I’ve had many people support me mentally and spiritually throughout my life. I always say my number one supporter is my grandma! She is literally the best person ever! A lot of people don’t get to meet their great grandparents or grandparents, and thankfully I had very supportive grandparents my entire life. My parents supported me the best they could, but like most of us, our parents don’t always agree that pursuing a creative dream is a “real job”. They sent me to college and wondered why I wasn’t pursuing a career using my Bachelors Degree. I knew my vessel was meant to be used for bigger reasons.
Once I decided to move to LA to pursue my dance career I found a mentor. Cameron Lee Mentorship changed my entire dance life. He has choreographed and danced for many artists, some legendary. He is very passionate about guiding and training new dancers with an old school type of love. My two years in LA I GREW so much as an individual and dancer. I can’t thank Cameron enough, he spends a good amount of his life pouring into his students and loving on them just like their parents would. I had a few choreographers I trained under while in LA Kiira Harper, Aisha Francis, and Davion Coleman are some major people that have impacted my life as a creative.

Skip through the pandemic, I began training as a professional Birth worker. I am now a full-time Birth Keeper (doula, labor assistant). When I graduated college I became a Nanny to help fund my life while pursuing dance. My love for supporting families deepened and once I moved to ATL I started supporting more black families. I grew a deep love for assisting Black birthing people in the medical world. I joined the Atlanta Doula Collective and wow have they given me so many opportunities. I’m going into my third year as a birthworker and I will be TEACHING curriculum to other aspiring Black doulas. Midwife Mama Sekesa has impacted so many within the Atlanta Metro Area and I’m so grateFULL for her support and guidance. I also was able to find a mentor, Shaconna Haley through asking my social media friends for help. There’s nothing like the support you get from a social media friend you never met! LOL

Shaconna Haley has been my one on one mentor for almost a year now, along with a few other birth sisters she’s mentoring. We gather monthly to learn and fellowship with one another. Through this mentorship I have grown to love me some Bell Hooks (rest in power). SHE is the definition of Black Wombyn. Her work speaks for itself. Learning how to dismantle the system and reclaim our history has been very important for me as I continue to advocate for Black people.
