We had the good fortune of connecting with The Murphs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi The Murphs, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think we all chose this path because we didn’t feel like we could be completely fulfilled otherwise. The music business can be draining and discouraging at times, as many know, especially recently through the pandemic. We always joke though by saying “what else can we do?” Music is what we do. Music is what we love. Music is our element and the stage is our home. It was never an option to not pursue music, so we continuously approach new challenges from as many different angles as possible.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We all bring similar but slightly different musical tastes and sounds to the band and we have loved the way it has meshed. We all grew up listening to some variation of classic country, folk, southern rock, or bluegrass. However, our individual backgrounds with performing music brought us into the band from different directions. Katie comes into the band with a strong musical theater background. Cody and Austin both have (and continue to have) solo music careers with slightly different sounds. Cody’s solo music has a very roots rock vibe, with influences like Tom Petty and Neil Young coming through. Austin’s solo music often reflects more of a folk sound, which stems a lot from his western North Carolina upbringing. When we decided to put it all together, the result was a cool Americana blend that can go in many different directions, but is still always glued together by the staple of our sound, which is our harmonies.
As any in the music industry will tell you, there is rarely, if ever, a shortcut. There are a lot of nights along the way of playing to the wall in the corner of a bar. It can be frustrating and disheartening for sure. However, one thing about this band is that we have fun together on stage and we truly love what we do. It doesn’t matter if we are playing to 300 people or five, we will put our best foot forward. You never know who might walk away loving your sound and forever spreading the word. And we appreciate that to no end, no matter how small or large the scale.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being as we are a roots rock band that likes to enjoy some cold bar beverages, we’d probably take our friend that’s in town to see some live music and indulge in some cold drinks. One of my favorite spots is
– Stroll/bar hop down the beltline. Virginia highlands through Inman Park.
– to Little Five Points to El Myr to get some Grizzes (a Grizz is a mini corona with a tequila shot poured in the neck of the bottle)
– then go to Eddie’s Attic for an intimate acoustic show
– Followed by some live blues music from some of the best musicians in ATL at Northside Tavern
– Then, if you’re still alive, 11th street pub for a nightcap, most likely Uber home though
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, our families deserve a monumental amount of credit. We have all been very blessed to have involved and supportive families throughout all of our endeavors in life. We have a very supportive group of friends and followers, led by our best friend and social media coordinator, Krista Maggart, who have been so instrumental in spreading our music to so many new people.
