We had the good fortune of connecting with Teyi Aponte and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teyi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My journey into photography actually began with my family, especially my grandmother, who lived to 101 and was a huge inspiration to me. I was always the one behind the camera, capturing everyday moments, but my grandmother was my first real ‘subject.’ She was my role model, and I had this deep sense that I needed to preserve as much of her life as possible — her expressions, her wisdom, her essence. In a way, I felt like a chronicler, documenting our family’s history through her story.

This experience shaped how I approached starting my own business. I saw the power of photography to keep memories alive and meaningful, and I wanted to offer that to others. My work became about capturing moments that feel real and significant, whether it’s a family milestone or an entrepreneur’s passion. Photography, for me, is a way of preserving stories that matter.
A blend of making a meaningful impact, creating work I’m proud of, and knowing that I’m supporting others along the way. It’s about helping clients feel seen and empowered through the images we create together and building a business that aligns with my values. I also want to be a role model — for my kids, my family, and showing that it’s possible to pursue a fulfilling, creative career that has a purpose.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is about capturing real, meaningful moments — whether it’s a family gathering, a pregnancy, or a product launch for a business. What sets me apart is my focus on creating a comfortable space where my clients feel seen and relaxed, allowing their true selves to shine through. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with clients, especially women entrepreneurs and mothers, who trust me to tell their stories in a genuine way.

Getting to where I am wasn’t easy. Starting my business in Venezuela, then transitioning to a new country, presented many challenges. But through resilience and embracing my own style, I’ve learned to overcome obstacles and stay true to my purpose. My brand isn’t just about creating beautiful photos; it’s about preserving memories and empowering people to share their stories. I want people to know that every image I create is a reflection of my passion for making a meaningful impact.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would probably start for showing them Lake Lanier, I love to go through the Dam and see the lake and the river beneath, and during fall all the changing color leaves. I will then take them to Midtown Atlanta, to eat at Yeppa one of my favorite restaurants. We will walk through piedmont park and take some pictures of the Atlanta skyline. We would visit the beltline, and Ponce City Market, where we could continue taking amazingly fun pictures. We will end up our afternoons drinking coffee or bobba in one of the amazing korean cafés in Duluth. Maybe have some rose Tteokbokki at 99K Chicken & Pizza. We will go on the weekend to the mountains and visit Dahlonega, and have some wine tasting. And in between all, visit a quaint little historic downtown like Duluth, or Marietta, or Acworth to do a fun photoshoot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who have been part of my journey, and I’m so grateful for each one. First and foremost, my mom, Noris Simoza. She’s the one who taught me to believe in myself and showed me that taking risks is sometimes exactly what you need to reach your goals. I wouldn’t be where I am without her influence. Then there’s Marian Urdaneta from Pavola by Marian. She inspires me every day to keep going after my dreams and to be better in everything I do. My sister Teddy Aponte, a true testimony of resilience. She has overcome a lot, and has come on top, going from zero to be the best on her field. And she teaches me the power of believing in oneself, and to take the leap even when you are scare

And I can’t forget all the incredible women I’ve met along the way. Each one has shown me something about the power of fighting for your dreams and pushing through. I carry a piece of every woman who’s crossed my path with me, and their strength keeps me grounded and motivated. This journey hasn’t been mine alone — it’s been shaped by all of them
