Meet Tessa Hanley-Cowlah | Creative Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tessa Hanley-Cowlah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tessa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a child, I would’ve never entertained the idea of fitness being fun! I always enjoyed being active, but only if there was a creative spin on it. I did however, always have a passion for dancing. Being an introvert, Dancing allowed me to escape, express and create.
Years later, I took a Zumba class (a Colombian dance fitness program) at my local gym and I absolutely loved it! It combined my passion for dance with an intense cardiovascular workout without me focusing on the fact that I was exercising. The idea then sparked in my head to create a similar class experience that offered different styles and dance types involving hip hop and urban mixes.
I pursued my group fitness certification, unfortunately, a year later I was diagnosed with Lupus which completely put my fitness goals and activities on hold. I was fighting for my life, my mobility and my health. It was during this period that I promised myself, once I’m able to get back to operating at at-least 30% I am going hard! I’m going to fully pursue my dreams with dance fitness and I will give it my all. I will no longer take physical activity and passion projects for granted. I realized that you never truly know how much you love something until it’s taken away from you.
After getting this chronic illness under control and to a manageable point, I officially began Assetworkx Enterprise which offers Virtual Dance Fitness, Hair & Beauty services and event planning & more!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Anything worth having is going to be a challenge. I believe that each struggle is and ingredient to your success. I embraced the obstacles of starting a new business, retaining members and participants, and understanding marketing and advertisements. The road isn’t smooth but it’s exactly what God has set out for me so I take things day by day and look for ways to improve daily.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Piedmont Park & partake in a yoga or wellness class. We’d go biking on the belt line, and eat at any of the many Atlanta restaurant choices we have. I’d also take them to the Sundial at night fall and follow up with the Skyview Farris wheel. We’d do a city pass to take care of our tourist needs and explore the many Atlanta Nightlife options. I’d also make sure to visit some of the local Atlanta food spots.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and my family are my backbone and foundation to my business journey.
