We had the good fortune of connecting with Tesharra Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tesharra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I am living proof that anyone who wants to start a successful business can do it. I NEVER wanted my own business until about two years ago. I was very comfortable with working my 9-5 teaching gig, getting my check once a month, allowing the government to take most of it in taxes, and having enough to pay my bills. After all, it was what I went to college for and it was my temporary definition of success. Once Covid-19 hit, my mindset shifted immediately and my goals, dreams, achievements, and the definition of success started to look different. I began to see that becoming an entrepreneur was not a choice buy a necessity. It was time to become financially free, create generational wealth, and to use my skillset to build a successful long lasting business. I am a firm believer that everyone needs a home based business or a side gig. 2020 taught us that jobs are not reliable. Each individual possesses a talent or unique ability to contribute to the world. We just have to tap into it, study intensely, create a plan, and execute. It is that simple. Most entrepreneurs fail within their first 2 years. This number is much greater for Realtors such as myself. I knew that the area of Real Estate was highly saturated with agents. There are tons on social media for people to choose from. However, that did not concern me at all. Just as I did in my classroom for 20 years, I knew that I would find a unique perspective to the business that would allow me to stand out from the crowd. Never be afraid or intimidated by those who are in the same field as you are. I intentionally did not use the word competition. The only competition that I have is myself. It’s me vs. me each day. I push and motivate myself to be better, and I never look over to see what others are doing. Don’t misunderstand me, it’s great to have mentors and role models, but you must let them serve as learning tools and not people in whom you compete with or compare yourself to. That becomes a distraction to your journey. You never see successful sprinters or marathon runners looking over in other lanes to check on their competition. They look straight ahead and focus on what they were trained to do. We are each given a lane. We must stay in it and push ourselves to greatness.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am currently a full-time Realtor in Marietta Georgia. I service the Cobb, Fulton, and Paulding areas. My specialty is in negotiations and making sure that my clients get the most out of their homes buying/selling experience. Having a background as a teacher has really given me an edge as it relates to my business. I am self-motivated, organized, creative, bold, and a true problem solver. It is often said that teachers make great Real Estate Agents and that has proven to be true for me. My skills have transferred seamlessly. In full transparency, I became a Realtor as a side gig that I would use once I retired from teaching. Due to Covid-19, my plan was derailed and Real Estate became my saving grace. It gave me the opportunity to walk away from a career that no longer served me, respected me, or fulfilled me. As an entrepreneur, I am given the chance to use my talents, skills, and knowledge to build wealth. The more I work, the more I make. I also have a rental property which produces passive income. The sensibility of this is not common to all. It took me over 40 years to realize that betting on me is very lucrative. Though delayed, I’m certainly not denied. I am making the absolute best out of the season in which I am in. I have no fear, no reservation, no distractions, and no doubt. With the support of my family and favor of God, my Real Estate business will continue to thrive. My buyers will continue to attain home. My sellers will continue to sell for top dollar. And God will continue to get the glory.
As I mentioned before, my profession is saturated with agents. The key to success is not to study the success of others too much. You should definitely observe and learn from their success, but do not spend too much time concerned with what others are doing. Use the majority of your time building your brand, creating specific systems that work for you, and finding your authentic niche in the business. Once these things are in place, you must spend time on execution. Far too often, I see people become forever students in life. There is a time to go to school and then there is a time to use your knowledge for your benefit. We must apply what we learned. That is how I am different in some ways. I do not hesitate with it comes to application. I am a doer and not just a thinker. It must come to fruition or it is simply a thought with no power or benefit to your life. It’s okay to dream, but at some point you must wake up and execute.
As it relates to my brand, I want people to know that my performance in the area of Real Estate is unmatched. Not because that sounds good to say, but because my clients and peers have confirmed that I have a talent for finding, selling, and putting families into their dream homes. I have the Google Reviews, sales, and volume to prove it. I am blessed to be able to use my gift in this capacity, and I don’t take it lightly. My father definitely taught me to work hard and never give up. My mother taught me to be smart and never accept failure. With that combination, I can’t lose.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok, I must be honest. I do not go out often. I am a home body. I truly appreciate a quiet evening at home with my family, a good meal, and maybe a movie (with a cup of coffee). Home is really where my heart is. This is also why I am a huge advocate of helping others find a comfortable home, so that they can have a haven away from all that the world presents. My motto is “Every Heart Deserves a Home”. However, when people come to visit, I do know how to show them a good time. The itinerary would look something like this:
Monday: We would go to the High Museum of Art and take pictures.
Tuesday: We would do a picnic at Piedmont Park and go to the Beltline.
Wednesday: We would go to Puttshack.
Thursday: We would go to Atlantic Station and do some shopping and enjoy some tasty food. I love Salata!
Friday: We would go to Ponce City Market to eat and shop some more.
Saturday: We would go to brunch at Atlanta Breakfast Club and end the night with going to SkyView.
Sunday: Because I am a true southern belle, I would cook her a full course meal before she gets on the road to return home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I know that this may sound a little cliché, but I must thank my family for their support of my quest to become an entrepreneur. It really started with the foundation that was created for me. I am from the small town of Cuthbert, Georgia. Though my parents did not teach me much about having my own business, they taught me transferrable skills that would help me run and keep a business. My father, Timothy Starling, was a hard working man who took pride in going to work and giving it a 100%. He believed that if you worked hard, kept a good name, paid your bills, and did right by people, that success was sure to follow. These qualities serve me very well in my current position as a Realtor. I give my clients 100% of my efforts and treat each one as if they are my only one. My mom taught be how to be strong, only say what I mean, and to always stand up for myself. These qualities give me my edge and sharpness in my business. I am so grateful for my humble beginnings and strong foundation from my parents. My parents along with the favor of God are the reasons why I wake each day and fill unstoppable. Having worked as a teacher for 20 years and deciding to let my consistent paycheck go, I really needed my husband Christopher on board. He was super supportive of my ability to make this transition work. It would have been very difficult if he did not understand my desires and vision of owning a business. I am thankful that we had a unified goal throughout this process. I must also shoutout my 21 year old daughter Darian, who left Target to work with me full-time. She is phenomenal! Not only is she my full-time assistant, but she is also a senior in college with multiple responsibilities on campus. With all of that, she is the creative mind behind what most people see and experience in my business. My 7 year old son C.J. is also instrumental in what I do. He is a master marketer. He is constantly telling his teachers and anyone who will listen that I can sell their home. C.J. is certainly great for business.
Lastly, but certainly not least, I must thank those who have sent me referrals and my clients who trusted me with finding and/or selling their home. Buying a home is one of the largest financial decisions that most people will make. I don’t take it lightly when someone calls me and says “I need your help”. Realizing that they could have called anyone else gives me the motivation that I need to ALWAYS present an Exceptional Real Estate Experience.
