We had the good fortune of connecting with Terry Lamar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terry, how do you think about risk?
I believe that risks are apart of every journey that’s never happen before. Risks along with sacrifices are necessary in life because they allow us to see and feel how bad we want our dreams. If this was not the case, everyone would be successful in general without much work or effort.
I feel that the chances in life are by design in which whoever overcomes them receives the reward on the other side of making the necessary risks and sacrifices in time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
It took a lot of faith and determination to be at the place I’m at in life now. I moved to atlanta,ga to pursue a career in photography, videography and as a music producer. I’ve been through some extremely hard times since I’ve been here, including being homeless. My faith in God wouldn’t allow me to give up on my dreams, one thing lead to another and things starting to turn for the better financially after finished my networking diploma at Herzing University. I started on the path of being a Network Engineer. After a few years, I landed a job as a Infrastructure Operations Engineer at a law firm.
At that time, I had put my music career on pause until I got things built up on the IT skills sets. Life started happening again and I went through a divorce. During this time alot of things were running through my mind. Should I just call a quits and go back home to Birmingham, Al. Like before, the faith on the inside wouldn’t let me give up. At the time, one of my friends were going through the same thing so put our heads together and invested into a house that we could use for all of our needs (Music Production, Film Production & etc).
About a year later, I lost my job due to the pandemic like many others but I already had supported from my friends along with the help of the CARES ACT which keep alot of people in their homes by pausing their mortgage payments. The pandemic was an extremely hard time but it brought out the best in me as far as reevaluating where am I in life and where am I going.
During this time, I started taking videos of the roller skate community in atlanta, ga. Due to cities being closed down all over the world, alot of people were on social media more than the would normally. Rollerskating was a perfect exercise due to the activity could be done by yourself inside/outside allowing the correct amount of social distancing.
I created my @sk8luv33 for the skate videos and @l.elemen247 for the music production videos. The @Sk8luv33 page on instagram grew almost over night during the pandemic which shifted my focus back to making music again but differently. I normally would make Rap/Trap, RnB, Hip-Hop or Neo-Soul but I grew an interest in this community of skaters so I started making skate music.
Since then, I have placed my music in a Smirnoff Documentary featuring the Atlanta Skate Scene. I was able to place three tracks. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX7HdXx5PCo&t=23s) – Smirnoff ATL Skate Documentary | YouTube | Sk8luv33 Music Featured (@sk8luv33, @l.elemen247) – Time Stamps: 1:34, 2:34, 4:38.
Some of my musical influences are from Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, North Carolina, Los Angeles.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
I’ve learned so many lessons. One of the most important lesson is to never give up a your dreams or vision in spite of hard times in life. If I would of given up, all of these great things that are happening now would not have come to past.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I want the world to know that l.elemen247 (Sk8luv33) is a trendsetter, entrepreneur, social media content creator, videographer and music producer all in one. I may be the only the person who record videos, produce music and help create my 2 roller skate nights (Sk8luv33 & Phyllis Brown) – “Diggin’ in the Crates” Sparkles Smyrna & JB Rehearsal Thursdays at Stone Mountain Skates
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta Beltline – Walking the beltline visiting the stores to eat the foods and etc.
If you’re in town and you like grown folks music, you should visit “Diggin’ in the Crates” at Sparkles Smyrna every Tuesday from 7p to 11pm.
If you’re in town and you are a JB Skater or like JB Chicago Skate Music, you should visit “JB Rehearsal Thursdays” at Stone Mountain Skates every Thursday from 9pm to 12am.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Charles Cooper, Avery Johnson, Rick Morris – These individuals have represented as a positive male role models in my life (in my adult years). They have been great mentors.
