We had the good fortune of connecting with Terry Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terry, why did you pursue a creative career?
For as long as I can remember I’ve been intrigued by artistic expression. One of the main reasons I chose a career as an artist is because I have something to say. The place my heart and mind operate from is a space I feel like people can connect with. Life is about servanthood and empathy. Being in an industry where I can constantly connect with others while simultaneously telling relatable stories is something that fills my soul. There is a certain freedom I experience when performing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m still very early in my career. What excites me the most about it seeing how far I’ve already come, and I don’t just mean accomplishments or success. I mean the person I’m becoming. The artist I’m discovering. The process I’m embracing. God has brought me to where I am today. He has guided me and graced me to be here. It’s impossible to exist in this space without a certain level of faith and delusion. I’ve learned that if you wait until you “feel” ready to go chase something that keeps you up at night, then you’ll never do it. Sometimes you just have to dive in and figure things out along the way. The main thing that has helped me is keeping my ultimate goal at the forefront, and that is to be the man I was called to be. I want people to know that there is nothing wrong with failure. In fact, it propels you into success. It fuels the engine for it. You just have to be willing to take that step of faith and keep moving forward even when your vision may seem blurry.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend came to visit and they’ve never been to Atlanta, I’m going to give them two different experiences. The touristy Atlanta experience and the Born Here experience. We’d hit Stone Mountain, World of Coke, and The Aquarium – as well as The Beltline, Little Five Points, Ponce City, and Peter Street.

I love when I meet people who know all of the whole in the wall spots. The club scene is cool but I’ve been to some places that have live music, great food + drinks, but aren’t necessarily “mainstream” Atlanta.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my family for being supportive of my artistic endeavors. I understand it’s not always the easiest thing to hear when your son or brother wants to pivot from a corporate job to industry known for its instability. However, I have ben supported and given the space to pursue my passions. I am thankful for that.
