We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Smitherman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I love to act and sing because maybe it can help someone out there who might be going through a tough time. I know that it always helps me to hear or watch something that is happy or funny and uplifting. Maybe I can be that for someone when I sing or act. It’s also really cool to play a part where I have to learn something new like with the script and topics in the dialogue. Maybe someone watching a movie or tv show that I’m in will learn something new too, and find it as cool as I do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m only 9 and have been acting for about two years. But I’ve been told by previous Directors and my private coach that I “soak up direction and ideas and spit it back out in performance very well. That’s hard to find in such a young actor.”
Also, my family shares multiple cultures and I like to be able to apply what I know of each of our cultures into my performances. Mom is super logical, and Dad is very comical. I feel like I get an awesome mix of the two. #gigglesarelife
Because I like a challenge when I perform, I like to try and flip between serious and comedic roles. Each time I get a new role, I think this process of changing up the types of characters and the emotions, start to become easier for me…It’s like a lightbulb turns on when I “Get it”.
Not only do I act, but I also sing, and do voiceovers and musical theater. I have been actively auditioning. In my two years- I’ve been blessed enough to book 6 short films, one major voiceover with The Daily Wire, two other voiceover roles with Concrete HQ and multiple Industrial type projects. It was pretty good considering the dual strikes in 2023.
Morally speaking-I’ve learned from mom/dad and other positive influences in my life to hold myself to higher ground, So, no violent scenes or immoral material. If it makes me feel icky, it’ll make others feel icky to watch me. That’s no fun.
It’s not always easy for me to act or sing certain roles or songs. And that’s ok. But I know that with hard work and my never-ending determination (quote from my mom) that I can only do the best I can do for each performance and hopefully I learn something that will help me do it better the next time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There would be so much to do! If I could hang out with my best friend for a few days in a row…I’d want to go with her to the following:
Day 1 (Monday) –
My favorite must-see attractions in Atlanta such as Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola.
Day 2 (Tuesday) –
I’d love to play golf on a course or top golf-This would be a blast.
Nacho Daddy for gourmet nachos.
Day 3 (Wednesday) –
The Mall of Georgia-so much to do here!!!
Nail salon-mani/pedi time
Movie Tavern – see any new and exciting movie
Have some Korean corndogs and Kyu Ramen-Need I say more?
Day 4 (Thursday) –
Concert/show at a major theatre company- I love a good musical!!! so I’d like to take her to Alliance Theatre or go see a show at The Fox Theatre.
Day 5 (Friday) –
Sleepover at Great Wolf Lodge-This place is AWESOME!!!
Day 6 –
Roller skating or ice skating-I’m a little clumsy, but that doesn’t hold me back from getting back in the rink.
Stone Mountain for laser show for various celebrations. This is always something I love to do with family and friends.
Day 7 –
Medieval times-I love the theatre aspect of this place. I get awesome food and a show all in one. And it’s British dialect from the actors is so much fun too. I’m learning the London dialect with my coach, so hearing it performed is cool!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A special thanks to everyone at The Actors Scene in Buford, GA. They have taught me invaluable skills to grow and become a knowledgeable and wonderful budding actress.
So thankful to my awesome hustling agents Atlanta Models & Talent, CESD – NY Youth, and my manager Nicolle Campbell, who has been a wonderful influence and guiding light in my acting career.
Mom and Dad, your encouragement and support have been so helpful in allowing me to realize that acting is not only fun, but it could be what I do for the rest of my life.
Coach Kristi Taylor, thank you for helping me grow skills not only in class but also with private lessons. I never want to miss your classes/lessons. They are so much fun! You have been a positive influence on me and helped me gain confidence and be a better person.
Morgan Watkins, my fellow actor friend who is encouraging and a great scene practice partner.
Finally, and most importantly God-I’m happy to have God in my life.
