We had the good fortune of connecting with Tawny Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tawny, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well I always thought as a kid that I would own my own business one day, but as I became an adult I never really saw it coming to fruition or I just didn’t know how it would. It seemed very out of reach for me for a long time. Until ultimately I experienced some dissatisfaction in the last few roles I had prior to becoming self-employed, in watching my supervisors make decisions that I disagreed with or do things in such a way that I thought to myself, “I could do that better, or more effectively.” Now whether or not I actually could, who knows! But I would say I started my own business out of a fair degree of dissatisfaction. And I think I’m a person who likes what I like, and I want what I want. And I don’t really like inefficiencies. So I saw the opportunity to just do things my way and not have to negotiate with anyone or answer to anyone, and I really liked the possibility of what I saw.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well, I’ve never heard of a Social Justice Financial Strategist before. So I think that’s what sets me apart from other Financial Planners and Financial Professionals. I take a strong social justice lens and approach to my work. I primarily do outreach and marketing to the Black community, and my intention is to help my community alter our relationship with money from generational debt to generational wealth. Through my work I’m able to help black individuals, families and businesses acquire residential and commercial Real Estate, expand their businesses, have more financial capital and inherently, more power to combat forces such as gentrification and to help us gain a bigger voice in our entire country, from politics to media to creating more role models to mentorship… All around my business is finance and I don’t know anyone else who approaches it in the way that I do. I got where I am today in an interesting path, I have a background in sociology and that always really mattered to me and I just so happened to end up at a community development organization educating folks on finance. It’s sort of just happened, it’s not what I planned, and I absolutely love what I’ve got! I don’t think anything worth having is ever really easy, so no it was not easy creating my own business and stepping out on my own was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. And it is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I overcame challenges with lots of great coaches and mentors around me, with prayer and meditation, and just by staying committed to my goals and the vision that I had, and not showing myself to get stopped by hiccups or roadblocks. Your belief has to be bigger than your challenges. My belief in myself is pretty Rockstar.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay, so boom. My friend visits from out of town on a Friday and the first place I’m taking them is to mezcalito’s in Grant Park for lunch of tacos and mezcal Rita’s, after that we will hit the Glenwood for a few cheap drinks and play the jukebox till 1am. On Saturday we’ll grab a nutritious lunch at tassili’s raw reality, to refuel after last night’s drinks. Then we’ll take a walk on the beltline, watch some of the skaters at old Fourth Ward Park, maybe stumble across some live musicians playing grab ice cream at Jenni’s ice cream at Krog Street market. For dinner, we’ll hit The Lawrence on juniper and enjoy some craft cocktails, then head to Little Spirit to dance the rest of the night away! They for Sunday brunch we’ll go to Negril Village for what I like to call “Brunch Club,” for a Caribbean inspired breakfast and live band!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out Landmark Worldwide, for giving me the training, education and coaching that was absolutely necessary for me to have the courage to create my own business and believe in myself and the skills to actually accomplish that effectively. I am certain that I would not have what I have and be where I am, without Landmark education
