We had the good fortune of connecting with Tawania Grangent and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tawania, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Being a woman of a particular age, plus size and of color I felt that I wasn’t anyone’s first choice to cast in projects. Sure, I could get background roles, but after many years on stage and at least two in film, I felt that I had the experience and talent to be at least someone’s co-star. Then one day as I was in character as a day player on a popular Atlanta television show, I looked up at one of the leading actors who was blowing his lines and blowing them royally. I said to myself, respectfully, “That’s it. I know that I’m better than this guy”. The next day my husband and I formulated a plan that would ensure that we would never have to wait for anyone to book us as lead actors ever again.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner of Tawania Grangent Entertainment. We are a full-service Production Company. We are dedicated to assisting the new writer, the untapped talent and the person with a big vision and a small budget make their dreams come true by taking their script and turning it into an amazing film. Currently we have 7 short films on You-Tube and 2 Feature Films, one of those is “Pseudo” that was written by Brian Cole. “Pseudo” is currently under the Dame Dash/Homestead Entertainment Umbrella and is streaming on TUBI. Getting here was definitely hard as no one wanted to take a chance on us. Before being commissioned by any writers we had to prove that we could actually deliver. We completed 5 short films during the height of Covid which meant testing our cast and crew regularly while adhering to the same protocols that major productions had to. We’ve had productions that we felt weren’t good enough to release and we’ve even had Executive Producers and others to pull projects before we could finish them. But on the opposite end of that we have films that have gone to competitions and films that have inspired and encouraged. We have films that put the spotlight on mental health issues, racism and even child sexual abuse. We have made many lifelong friends, and clients.
We like to say that we aren’t perfect, but we absolutely do our best to ensure the success of everything that we touch.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As an Army Veteran and a Philadelphia native, I have friends all across the Globe and they love to visit Atlanta. Whenever I get a call that a friend or family member is preparing to visit, I immediately do a search for a game. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is; I insist that my friends see the Falcons, Braves, Hawks and/or Atlanta United. Next, I’ll plan for a good cultural event. A nice play at the Alliance Theater or even better The Douglasville Community Theater where I am the resident Director and on the Board. When my visitor arrives, they will be greeted with a home-cooked southern meal and since I am a foodie, we will make stops all around the city to include Minero, Slutty Vegan, Poor Calvins and Herban Fix. Last, my friend and I will spend a relaxing day at Jeju followed up by time on my deck accompanied by my husband on the grill.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God is definitely the head of my life and I thank him for every blessing from above. That includes my life, health, strength and talent. He has also blessed me with a supportive family that includes my husband who always allows me to explore my creativity and my children who don’t complain when I’m away trying to take over the world.
