We had the good fortune of connecting with Tavia Mapp-Deterville and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tavia, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I normally hate the question, “How do you balance?”. As a mom, wife, entrepreneur, I don’t balance, I just do. Are there areas that I wish I was more attentive to, of course. But I don’t look to balance, I look to merely do everything that I need to do. Simple as that
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I got into Public Relations literally because someone already in the field said that I would be great at it. Has it been easy, no but he has been very rewarding. Publicity can be a thankless job as what I do does not bring about a check for my clients but it does make people aware of who they are and why they matter. There are many lessons that I have learned but the most important is to underpromise, over deliver. I want the world to know that no matter the project, I cared about my clients. I cared about their image, I fought for their visibility and I walked beside them in every decision.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Brunch isn’t Brunch without Toast on Lenox or Breakfast at Barney’s. I could eat Nan’s Thai Fine Dining every day for dinner! If it’s not cold, ride the ferris wheel, go to the aquarium and stop by Martin Luther King’s house.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out the Heartshare Organization and the Family Services they provide for Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy.
