We had the good fortune of connecting with Tasheka King Bines and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tasheka, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process for starting my business came after I lost my father in November of 2018 after losing a battle with an illness. My parents, William ( Mett) & Gladys have always opened their home to people in need. My father Mett also loved to cook, and our family fed a lot of people in the community and surrounding areas. My mom, Gladys recently passed away after battling cancer. I learned about the homelessness in Brunswick County, and became inspired and decided I must do something to change it. I saw homelessness as a significant problem that was not being addressed in the area and discovered that these vulnerable populations were being transferred to surrounding counties. I decided now is the time for change.
What should our readers know about your business?
Our mission Is to improve the lives of the vulnerable population experiencing homelessness by providing transitional housing and services that will empower them to improve the quality and build secure and safe lives. We are in the process of finding a facility but we do have a business office where the vulnerable population can come and get grab bags with personal hygiene products, combs, toothpaste and etc. we also have food gift cards available so they can get breakfast, lunch or dinner.
It is definitely not easy, it’s hard but you will get thru it. I almost gave up but I kept praying, asking God to give me strength, knowledge and to have patience. He has done just that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First of all I’m not cooking the day of arrival lol so I would take her to Captain John’s Seafood. His food is delicious!!! Captain John’s Seafood is a traveling food truck from Supply, NC. Next we would go to Myrtle Beach,Sc. Myrtle beach has a lot of things you can do. Broadway at the beach, Broadway Grand Prix, Myrtle Waves Water Park, Duplin Winery, Skywheel , Cruisin Tikis Myrtle beach and so much more. Food places in Myrtle beach would be Benjamin’s, Bennett’s, Blueberry’s Grill and more…
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my Board of Director’s . When I first started, I was thinking of people who would be a great asset to my organization. I couldn’t have choose a better group of people. They are all hardworking and dedicated. They are unique in their own way. I’m very proud of them and everything that we have accomplished thus far together. Also I would like to shoutout Resea Willis with BHO (Brunswick Housing Opportunities). I talked to her about my vision and she stepped right in and guided me and my board of directors even til this day. Very powerful, educated woman and she does not play no games. Thank you and you are greatly appreciated!!!
