We had the good fortune of connecting with Tarus Godbolt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tarus, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I find that I have to be intentional in regards to keeping a healthy work/life balance. When I start a business, I tend to get consumed by it and work continuously to get it off the ground. If I’m not careful, I can easily get lost in my work and my husbandly and fatherly duties could get neglected. With that in mind, I try to make sure to maintain balance. I try to work within a set schedule, with daily quitting times and at least have one day a week with no work at all so I can devote time to my family. Even when we are working, in between sessions, my wife and I like to take what we call “micro-dates”. We take a quick walk in the park, grab a bite at a local restaurant, or get a drink between shoots. We try to maintain balance the best way we can.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, I got into photography in 2010 before my first son was born. I had a goal of taking “professional” photos of my baby. I bought my first DSLR and when he was born, and I started taking photos of him. Needless to say, the photos weren’t as professional as I expected. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I started reading and viewing YouTube videos and learned the functions of my camera and how to use lighting. Soon, I started to notice a difference in my photography. Others started to notice as well. My wife was the first to tell me that I needed to become a professional photographer. I thought she was just being a good wife, and was just being encouraging. Then others started to reiterate that same encouragement, so I took a leap and put myself out there as a photographer. Learning photography wasn’t easy and its a continual process. There are always challenges, but I’ve learned that most of the time they can be overcome by keeping things simple. I just want people to know that when they hire Tarus Godbolt Photography, our goal is to make sure you have the best photography experience you’ve ever had.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Mardi Gras season is the best time of year in Mobile, AL. I would definitely take my friend downtown during Mardi Gras. We would go a few hours early and take in the sights downtown. We would go to SOCU for fine dining and the Haberdasher to get a couple drinks. After waiting on the streets of downtown with thousands of people, you would vaguely hear the sound of police sirens and high school bands. That’s when you know the Mardi Gras parade is close. After enjoying the sights and sounds of Mardi Gras, We would take in some music and dining at Flava’s Bar and Lounge. Before my friend leaves town, we would definitely spend a day at the beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout my wife, Kimberly. She is my biggest fan and supporter. She is always there to encourage me and she’s also my photography assistant. She’s one of the main reasons that I’m a photographer. She saw potential in me when I didn’t see it in myself. She lets me know when I’m working too much and helps me balance my life. I am forever grateful to God for her.
