We had the good fortune of connecting with Tariq Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tariq, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I believe the habits that are vital in helping anyone succeed in any endeavor are discipline, consistency, and patience. I’ve had ups and downs like anyone else but once I applied those habits to my life those downs didn’t seem to come as often or hit as hard when they did come. Discipline keeps you focused on your strategy and not be side-tracked by what someone else has going on. Consistency builds mental toughness and character which allows you to be dependable and show up even on days you might not feel like it and lastly, patience helps you remain calm in the midst of the storm. Knowing there is a light at the end of the journey and you just have to make it to the good part.

What should our readers know about your business?
Good question: I have to credit my exposure to the world to where I am today business-wise. It definitely was not easy. Born and raised in Newark, NJ, and then moving to West Palm Beach, Fl as a teenager was a huge culture shock but set the foundation for me being adaptable to change. I was fortunate enough to go to Florida A&M University on a football scholarship. The crazy part is before they recruited me I had never heard of the school before. I am proud that I am a first-generation college graduate and able to bring education and degrees to my family tree and have that as a standard for future generations in the family. Upon finishing college I played professional arena football which took me to place in North Carolina, South Carolina, and California. Being around so many different cultures again forced me to adapt and understand that people in general think and move differently. Finally deciding to move to Atlanta 2 years ago with the goal of buying a house I was once again introduced to another way of life. All those places helped cultivate me personally and also the foundation for my company Daboc. Before moving to Atlanta I already realized the entrepreneurial energy here and the pride of ownership in the black community. I didn’t get that in any of the other places I lived. Daboc is really an acronym for Dope Ass Black Owned Company with the purpose of Developing and Building Our Communities. This journey has not at all been easy. I believe any entrepreneur will agree that starting your own business is not for the faint of heart. I’ve dealt with setbacks, racism, money loss, relationship loss, negativity, doubters, you name it but because of my past was able to fight through the adversity. Overcoming those challenges reverts back to my habits of being disciplined, consistent, patient, and realizing I’m just built different.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Nah, it was all me ha. Just kidding I owe a big part of my success to my family and friends for keeping me motivated and being the support one needs for growth. Being able to bounce ideas off of them and use them as a personal therapist to talk through issues and any doubts I might have had. I have become an avid reader so although there are many books that have helped me along my journey, 2 that stick out are The Alchemist and The Richest Man in Babylon. Both helped me learn to enjoy the journey and appreciate the process.
