We had the good fortune of connecting with Tara Mitchner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tara, what matters most to you?
I think as priorities change and evolve over time..so will the values that matter the most. At this time determination is one value that has been a constant in my life especially over the last year…opening a business and keeping the doors open during a pandemic.
. Despite entering into this new world of entrepreneurship, mostly alone I know that whatever outcome I receive ..I have learned many valuable lessons.
To keep moving forward on the most trying, bleak days…requires determination.

I guess you would say the value of determination has been long standing with me..starting when I became a teenage mother, but I was determined to not just be a “statistic” and began going to college for nursing…and now years later opening a business that I run with my children.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Wow, let’s see a short version after I had my son, I knew that I wanted to provide a good life for him. I went to school for Medical Assistant, then about a year later school to be a Licensed practical nurse and then a Registered Nurse. I would say I am proud of myself for continuing to strive for more and not being complacent at any stage. As my children got up in age, I wanted to provide more opportunities and knowledge for them ..so coming across a business that fit with my nursing career AND that I would be able to work with children was divine. The challenges have been many…but I try to learn from each and not focus on the perceived “problem”…..let’s find the solution.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, this will be a tough one because I’m either at my shop or working my night nursing job. Let’s see what I can come up with! I would find out what events are happening in the city. Live music events, spoken word ..are always a good time.
Brunch at Lighthouse on the Lake, maybe a day party at Minerva. Then would find a chill, grown up vibes evening spot. (In between some smoothies at Kwench..of course!).
Usually when I’m vacationing or vice versus, I don’t like a strict itinerary….just like to let it flow. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Since starting on this journey , I have met many amazing people. I of course am ever grateful for the support of my family. They have supported me and worked side by side in my store. My mentor/sister and friend Aireka Harvell of Nodat has sat with me, cried with me and included me in business think tanks and has always been an opening ear.
Dimeta Smith-Knight CPA, has given me so much support and guidance without judgement..truly invaluable.

Brain trust is an organization that empowers women founders in growing their businesses, led by Sherry Stewart Deutschmann and I’ve met brilliant women being apart of this organization.

A shoutout to anyone who has crossed my path, spoke with me, shared their story, advice, words of encouragement…I appreciate you!
