Meet Taneisha Gordon: Wood Artist & Wood Worker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Taneisha Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taneisha, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I don’t agree with the advice “Work hard and you will be successful”. I always grew up with this belief that if I did the best and made it perfect, then everything would work in my favor and would fast track my career. I soon found out that is not always the case. The reality is sometimes no matter how much hard you put in, you may come up short or not as far along as you initially planned. Even though working hard doesn’t always result in success (Success viewed within society in terms of money, status, and material possessions), it allowed me to change my mindset and give success my own meaning that isn’t fueled by society’s definition. I view success as achieving the small milestones that will get me to my larger goals and the freedom and joy I feel while doing what I love. I by all means still work hard and work smart, but I don’t let the societal definition of success diminish how far I’ve come along and the success I’ve achieved so far.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Studio Sukhino is my wood working based business where I’ve done some of everything in the past – from wood murals to custom retail displays to LED wood signage. I am excited about essentially restructuring my business and focusing on a few select items, which will help my business grow.
The whole purpose of my business is to provide a sense of freedom and happiness for myself, but I also want that to be felt by others who experience and see my work. It started out being about me and finding my freedom, but has now turned into also creating products that touch and connect with people and provides some type of light or message that they need to see.
What sets me apart is the fact that I am a self taught wood worker and I create everything myself because I love to use my hands. There is something about making a custom piece by hand that makes it that much more special. I love using wood because every piece is natural and unique, just like all of us. Each and every product that is produced is distinct and every piece of artwork or product that is out there literally has pieces of me in them – I pour my energy into it all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I mainly grew up in Stockbridge, so our first stop would be Papi’s Cuban & Caribbean Grill. They have the best food – I love the beef and chicken empanadas, jerk chicken cuban wrap, and shrimp tostones supremos. We would definitely have to ride scooters or bikes along the Beltline and view all of the murals and sculptures. Other places to visit would be Ponce City Market – I love all of the little shops in there and I haven’t been disappointed with any of my food choices so far (Ramen from Ton Ton & a shrimp po’boy from W.H. Stiles Fish Camp). We would also have to stop at the Truist Park and play an Escape Game or two and while in the area stop for the best tacos at Taco T.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to any and everyone who has supported me along my journey. You are always appreciated and loved for your support.
