We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamyrah Hamlett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamyrah, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
God grant me the serenity to except the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can, and wisdom to know the difference. That was my mom‘s favorite affirmation which shortly became mine. What’s does that mean to me ? It’s actually a scripture that helps me keep my blinders on and creates a tunnel vision for me! It’s hard to except a lot of things in life especially when its death or a road block in life. This affirmation helps me focus on elevation within myself and not dwell in the past and or things I cannot do nothing about. I very much love the courage part because most times we “ourselves” are often our own biggest downfall and most of the time our biggest hater! Wisdom is a big factor because your mind could be your enemy but if you have the right mindset it could be your best friend with that being said this is my favorite affirmation because he gets me through the tough days. Lastly focus on what you can can control let go of what you cannot. A beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a hairstylist from a small state up North Connecticut who is just getting settled in Atlanta, I came to chase my dreams and what I see as a better environment for opportunity. I actually Graduated school and went straight to College is not prepared enough due to a poor education system. I then dropped out of school not only from the lack of a drive but because I feel like I did not belong there so I left and went to school for medical assisting. As soon as I understood the career path and how much school actually cost I would be plummeting in debt before the age 22, this school made me make a payment plan Arrangements on my first day signing up which would last 12 years after which was not worth the $15 an hour job I was going to have in the end so I quickly left. Hair started for me when I was in middle school/junior high I was braiding my mom, cousins, and friends here not knowing that this was stick like glue. Shortly after leaving school I was working in home care and marketing lost my job due to coronavirus and had to find something to do on the side making my way into the my first salon job, which quickly became an example on how not to run my business. Quickly finding a space to relocate I found a salon for call home within 2 weeks, then after a year there I relocating to my own spot. Now I am relocating once again not to a different spot but to a different state down south to chase my dreams. What sets me apart from others? I compete with myself every day not anybody else so I can become a better version of myself, and I’ve learned along the way that you have a target clientele and everybody is not for you. I would like the world and know that my brand is much more than me being a hairstylist but a space where you could come to be yourself and is judgment free I feel like most of my braiding sessions turns Into therapy sessions which is a safe space bringing back the old school hair salon vibe will you can come in just let a load off! The most challenging part in this whole process was being the underdog at one point in trying to rise above the haters, fake support, and false promises. Lastly what I’m most excited about is Atlanta I came to grow, grind, and really let my work speak for itself!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well if my best friend to come up I would start off by taking her to toast on Lenox a black owned breakfast spot that I completely love. Followed by a lunch at Hatty Bbqs to go get some real southern barbecue food, and of course we have to make our way to the Trap Museum then for dinner we will go by STK a great steakhouse. Lastly for drinks go get some daiquiris at cirque Lounge and sing some karaoke

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom is who I would like to dedicate my shoutout to she used to tell me I can be whatever I want I want in life and she would back me up and always support me, she was my biggest supporter and now my biggest drive to be successful ! She is the fuel in my tank that makes me work as hard as I do she deserves all the credit!
