We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammy Triolo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tammy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After being in corporate America for many years, and seeing how employees were starved for true advocacy around culture and DEI; I decided to leave my executive position and start a company to help companies create an inclusive and diverse culture. One that is built on culture first DEI numbers second. It’s not enough to recruit diverse candidates you have to foster a culture that makes them want to stay.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business started out of love and that’s great but love alone will not make your business successful. You have to have a plan. I had love and desire and not necessarily a plan. I assumed that because people knew me and my work getting clients would be easy. It was not! I had to learn how to do sales and, in my career, I had never been in a sales role and that was and to be honest still a challenge. What sets me and what I do apart is I do my work with honest empathy. I approach bias with honesty, but I give my clients empathy because much of our biases were given to us from, family, church and our environment. Unlearning is hard but I am there for my clients and help them through that with tough love and empathy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I tend to spend a lot of time in LGBTQIA spaces, so we will be on Wilton Manors drive. We can have dinner and brunch from any of the restaurants on the drive. My two favorite spots on the drive are Bubbles and Pearls and the PUB. We can catch drag shows to just a great night life all around.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout I’d like to include is Vonda Page. Vonda is the author of Dump DEI. Vonda page has been in the equity, inclusion, and justice movement in corporate spaces for more than 35 years. She has literally done it all from consulting to technology adoption within huge Global corporations. Vonda focuses on leadership as the core competency for optimal success. Vonda understands that unpacking anti-blackness is KEY.
