We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamecka Adell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamecka, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Starting out in the industry [back in the day] as a makeup artist, the primary focus was on products, techniques & tools and not the components beyond the brush. It wasn’t until I began working as a beauty consultant and seeking & investing in classes from professional, working artists that I realized there was a missing component, the business of side of being an artist. Initially, I didn’t realize running a business is just as, if not more important, as the safety and makeup skills themselves. I’m grateful for the professional working artists in my industry for recognizing this need and offering a learning opportunity beyond the brush.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since 2014, I’ve had the pleasure of working with clients of all ages from young pageant stars, men’s grooming for tv, brand collaborations, fashion shows, photoshoots, & wedding clients. What sets Tamecka Adell Beauty apart from others in my industry is that I offer my clients more than a makeup application service, they’re receiving an experience. With a boutique-style approach, I get to invite clients into a fully customized beauty experience for their special event. It’s 100% tailored to them. In addition, my flagship service offerings are exclusively designed to take place on-location, while others can be in-studio or virtual. The most common compliments my clients share is ‘they feel empowered’ and like that they have ‘someone they can trust to assist them with their beauty service, product recommendations and makeup lessons’. The experience I bring to the client seeks to get rid of them overwhelm and/or pressure they feel around the power of makeup.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since relocating Atlanta from New Jersey, I love there’s always something to do. Many of my friends would like to explore the arts, culture and restaurants often times with hopes of a celebrity siting. I’d plan day to night dining options to some of my favorite restaurants, like G. Garvin’s Low Country or pop into one of the many Soul Food Restaurants like, Who’s Got Soul. Next stop, the infamous “Slutty Vegan” is a must. For dessert, and for when we want to play dress up & head out for some night life, I’d have to take my bestie to Cafe Intermezzo. It’s always a vibe when I go there. Depending in the time of year, weather permitting, & if it’s “Fesitval Season”, we’d venture out & enjoy the cultural atmosphere of what Atalnta has to offer.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many talented artists that have inspired me to become the artist I am today. As the saying goes, “school is never out for the pro” and I continue to invest in my education year‐after-year. To kick-off my co-shoutouts I’d like to tip my brush to makeup artists and educators, Makeup by RenRen, Sonia Roselli and Tiyana Robinson. Each contributed to my career in different ways. Makeup by RenRen was one of the artists whom I would tune into on YouTube to learn makeup techniques back in the day. By practicing her techniques, I began booking jobs here and there, one of which turned into a TV opportunity for a reality TV show. I found myself tuning into her content as often as I could to continuously improve my techniques. Ultimately, I made the decision to invest in more formalized training and enrolled in the Master’s Certification Progam at IMA-Industry Makeup Academy of Atlanta, where I got to learn directly from Ren herself.
From a business management/back office perspective, my initial guidance came from Sonia Roselli, and Tiyana Robison. These two powerhouses are the beauty business mentors you didn’t know your business needed. Just a few years prior to my enrollment into IMA’s program, I came across a Washington D.C. artist, Tiyana Robinson. I began investing in many of her courses as she introduced me to running my makeup artistry business like the business it would soon become. I continue to receive [in-valuable] mentorship from her as her business strategies for creating a Signature Client Experience for weddings or special events, have been game-changing for my makeup artistry. Over time, I started refining my skillset and services for the type of client’s that would be the best fit for my style of artistry, looks that are more sophisticated and less trendy. What’s more, many of my clients were non-makeup wearers but wanted to learn how they can look and feel more confident with simple [makeup and skincare] techniques that don’t take a lot of time and fit with their lifestyle. Thanks to Sonia Roselli, a working bridal makeup artist, product developer and beauty business educator, I’ve been able to refine my artistry and services based on business systems designed just for working artists. Add-in, she has developed a skincare line with products, specially formulated for sensitive skin, that are staples in my kit as well as other artists that work well for skin prep under many makeup looks. To note, there have been many other artists who have inspired me that I have had the pleasure of learning from directly like Renny Vasquez, Sir John, Nicky Posley, and the late AJ Crimson.
