We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara ‘Tamigreeneyez’ Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamara ‘Tamigreeneyez’, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When I watched television as a child, I started to imagine myself on TV. I would recite the lines of my favorite commercials and mimic the reactions of my favorite characters. I was a very shy kid but acting helped me open up and gave me the space to express myself. I got into modeling years later after discovering how photogenic I am 😉 Similar to acting, modeling allows me to embody all sorts of characters. It’s fun, challenging, therapeutic, and has been a great confidence booster.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So I am a social media influencer as well as model and actress. I’m passionate about looking good, feeling good, and empowering people of color. My followers connect most with my quirky and youthful personality. Affectionately known as “Tami Green Eyes,” my Instagram page is a play on all things green – a color associated with optimism, motivation, and good health.

It has been a little easier navigating content creation as opposed to acting and modeling. It may take weeks of auditioning before landing a role. Whereas with influencing, I can create my own content starting with products and experiences I already love, which attracts more opportunities. I have learned through all areas of my entertainment career: if there aren’t enough roles for a black woman such as myself, I can always create my own. That’s one thing I love about living in today’s time. I don’t have to wait around to be picked for an opportunity. I can film and edit things myself and can control my image with projects I want to work on.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Bay Area has some awesome spots to visit. First we have to eat at my favorite taco truck, Tacos Mi Rancho in Oakland. Sooo good! Then let’s walk across the street to Lake Merritt where we can people-watch – everything from people exercising, to BBQing, to drum circling. My favorite museum is California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco – their planetarium shows amaze me every time. The museum is in Golden Gate park, which has tons to explore. Bringing it back to Oakland, let’s hit up AU Lounge for Chef Smelly’s famous garlic noodles and seafood. If we want to end the night dancing, we gotta check out Zanzi and Hello Stranger for those nice hip hop and afrobeats.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people who deserve credit for helping me in my acting and modeling career! I’d like to shoutout Eden Jequinto who runs the Guerilla Theater program at East Side Arts Alliance in Oakland, CA. Not only was Eden a bomb acting teacher, she taught her students how to stand up for themselves as young people of color. Through this program I was empowered to co-write two plays by the time I graduated high school. I also got to be mentored by world-renowned poet and civil right activist, Amiri Baraka. Guerilla Theater was the first program to encourage me to use my voice as a performer.
