We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had just gotten laid-off from my corporate job. I knew that I desired the flexibility and freedom that entrepreneurship offered. I had become a licensed nail tech 4 months prior to being notified about the lay-off and could never figure out the perfect plan to quit and start my nail business. So, when I got laid-off it was the perfect opportunity for me to do exactly that. My thought process was that I at least need to step out and try this on my own. The worse possible outcome would be returning to corporate America.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a bit different. I display my work on people’s nails. I build and shape the nails close to perfection then add basic to intricate designs, diamonds, 3d flowers, and more. The art is obviously a major aspect of my business but I feel like my customer service, professionalism, and focus on quality is what sets me apart. I understand that the way you make a person feel is really what a client/customer will remember. I’m also not afraid to share my knowledge with other nail techs. I currently provide continuing education classes for nail techs who specifically want to learn my techniques and level up their nail game. I’m excited about taking teaching to the next level by becoming a licensed nail instructor and possibly opening my own school. I don’t have a “rags to riches” story…I didn’t struggle. I had an amazing childhood, I graduated from the best HBCU in the land (Tennessee State University), I had a great career in corporate America, and I became a successful entrepreneur. My life has shaped the professional that I am today. My ability to be professional started very young, learning to treat people how you want to be treated. Honestly, the road got rough when I stepped into entrepreneurship. I’ve had to face myself and start breaking habits (i.e. procrastination) that are a lot easier to skate by with when you get a paycheck and PTO. However, it’s been the most rewarding thing that I have ever done in my life.
I want the world to know that Nail’d By Tammy happened because I let go and let God. I stopped trying to figure out how I was going to quit my job and start my nail business full time…I handed it over to God. Literally a week later I got laid off received severance pay and started Nail’d By Tammy full time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Nashville has really become quite the tourist attraction lately and there are so may new places that I have yet to explore. A week long itinerary would definitely consist of some relaxation. However, a nice itinerary of activities would definitely be a must! We would definitely have hit the following: -Fifth & Broadway area for some shopping and eat
-The WKND to lounge, hear good music, and have a few cocktails
-Vibes Bar & Lounge for hookah & brunch
-Slim & Huskys for some delicious pizza
-Sinema for brunch buffet
-Hampton Social for nice downtown brunch experience
-Surreal Spice Creations to grab delicious salad for a chill day
-Green Hills Mall for some luxury retail therapy
-Sambuca for an upscale dinner in The Gulch
-Cool Springs Galleria for even more retail therapy
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents are my biggest cheerleaders. Their love & support is unmatched. I specifically want to Shoutout my father because he has been an entrepreneur my entire life. He has intimate knowledge and understanding of what this entrepreneur life is about. His insight and experience have been invaluable to my business.
