Meet Tamara Denson

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Denson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamara, why did you pursue a creative career?
I started training in dance at a late age of fourteen years old. Even though I started training at age fourteen I fell in love with dance at seven years old. My mom was a professional dancer and dance teacher. She danced for cirque du soilel, Whitney Houston, on the TV show Fame, and in several dance companies around the world. Just to name a few things. She’s the one who introduced me to the dance world, she is my inspiration. I have learned a lot about the dance industry from her.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Pursing a career in dance is not for the weak. Not only does It take a lot of hard work and patience. It takes a lot of passion as well. You have to ABSOLUTELY love it and love what you are doing. Most artist will only show the aftermath (myself included). Once they book those dream jobs. But what they do not show is the amount of late nights and rejections it took them to get to that point. That is where the patience comes in. If this is a career you really want to pursue you have to trust the process and keep going.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Okay here’s a story that explains this shoutout. As all dancers know dance is very expensive. So finically my parents could not consistently provide the funds needed for dance (dance classes, dance shoes, dance attire etc.). So one day. My mom was working at the postal office at the time and a lady walks in with dance costumes to ship. My mom gave her advice on how to package the dance costumes. And the lady asked my mom how do you know this information? And my mom told the lady that she used to be a professional dancer and dance teacher. That lady was the director and owner of a new performing arts school in the area. After further discussion and some auditions my mom was the new jazz teacher and I was training with amazing instructors for free at a ABT (American Ballet theatre) certified studio. I give so much credit for my training to this school so I want to shoutout Lasley performing arts centre for pushing me and exceeding my technique and training.
