We had the good fortune of connecting with Tam The Viibe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tam, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from a small town in South Carolina called Pawley’s Island. It’s a small coastal town and not a lot happens there. I was brought up in a close knit community with geechi/gullah roots. I draw strongly from the influences of my roots. In some songs you can hear me stressing my accent for emphasis as a nod to my people at home. Growing up there made me feel confident and connected and hopefully that comes through when I’m performing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a hip hop artist. I’ve been writing poetry and rapping since I was a kid. I put the pen down for a while because I felt I was inexperienced. I didn’t feel like I had enough life experiences to be the type of artist that I wanted to be. I always knew that if I was going to be an artist then I wanted to really say something and not waste my voice. So I stopped writing and rapping and lived. I experienced the ups and downs of life and love, my own and others. The only challenges that I’ve faced are the ones that I set before myself. Once I got out of my own way then things seem to roll as planned. I want the world to know that music is healing no matter what genre that you listen to. I’m here to relate and hopefully make my listeners feel like they aren’t the only ones in the world that feel the way that they do.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I like being outdoors so I would definitely take them to the River Front park in downtown Columbia. I would take them to my favorite city spots to eat like Big Boys BBQ n Smokehouse or The Twist.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my sister J Lenee for always being supportive of my dream and for also always being my personal graphic designer and editor time and time again.
