We had the good fortune of connecting with Tajonyx and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tajonyx, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2008 I was met with the opportunity to submit a demo to Arista Records. I was a young college kid with big dreams of making it as a singer, so I took some of my student loan money and recorded a demo in Atlanta. That’s when I fell in love with the craft of creating a song from top to bottom. I never heard back from Arista, but I knew that if I kept going, I could make a name for myself in music.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a recording artist that writes music from the queer perspective. I released my debut album entitled “Phantom Fire” in March of this year, and it has been having a great impact in the queer community and for music lovers in general. This journey has not been easy. I have had to fight for my dreams harder than I’ve had to fight for anything else in my life. There have been many rejections and closed doors along the way, but I will never let that stop me from being successful. It’s in my DNA. I will make a name for myself in music either way. I want the world to feel inspired when they listen to my projects. I want them to feel accepted, loved and not alone. I want them to feel like they can get through whatever obstacles they face when they hear my project. Cause they can. I’m a living witness.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Ponce City Market. I love people watching there, and the food is great! Then we would go see a show at the Fox Theater.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All my choir directors and music teachers definitely deserve a shoutout. They were the wind beneath my wings and really affirmed my talents at a very young age. We’re it not for them, I wouldn’t know my value as a performer.
