We had the good fortune of connecting with Taimia Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taimia, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Initially, during the beginning of building my brand, I didn’t know how to separate both life & work. It was mostly non-stop work, sleepless nights, overthinking, having zero clue how to pace myself- and failure to plan ahead. There was so much lack of desire to carve out time for self, and actually making it a priority.
As a result.. I started to feel like I was stretching myself too thin. I reached a burnout phase – which not only blocked my creativity; but stagnated my overall productivity. Almost, like I was slowly losing interest.
But, with the help from other entrepreneurs who inspired me, and hardcore mirror talks – I made a conscious decision to honor myself more, embrace adequate rest & literally divide my work from my living space. Trust me, that was thee best thing I could’ve ever done.
Sometimes balance also means blending, when it comes to entrepreneurship. Knowing how to juggle both, but not letting one have more power over the other. Easier said than done, at times, but it’s a daily practice. Also, not overthinking, and accepting that it doesn’t always have to be perfect — helps with balance, as well.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I adore my brand because I design bold, transitional pieces, both women & men can easily pair with their ensembles. It’s the right amount of pop, that simply just brings the customer’s outfit to life. I’m especially proud of the growth of my business, and the amazing reviews/response from customers. The admiration encourages me to reach further, Reaching this point definitely wasn’t easy. And wanting to give up crossed my mind many times. Just learning how to pace myself, celebrate & reflect on how far I’ve come – keeps be balanced.
I want the world to know that Lil’ Miss Leather was an idea that came to mind simply because I have a special love for accessories. I knew (in my gut) that I was blessed with the gift and creative eye to start my own line. I don’t have a design/fashion background, nor did I graduate with any related degree. I am self-taught. In fact, my interest was in Criminal Justice before my passion came into fruition. Once I realized my own potential, everything else aligned. And still is..
What everyone must remember is that it starts with self, first.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend were visiting me for a week, we’d start off of with a morning of self-care. Stretching, herbal tea, perhaps followed with a massage. After, maybe a good lunch at Minero located at PCM, I’m obsessed with their chicken quesadillas! To walk off our food (lol), we’d take a nice stroll down the Beltline – which has some really cool scenic/mural art. Then we’d end the night at one of my favorite restaurants – Apt 4B in Buckhead. They have some of the most amazing Dj’s, and the best red snapper you can get in the city.
I’d say five nights of that, incorporated with a few chill Netflix evenings, and a bottle of vino — would be the perfect trip for my guest.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I absolutely would not have been able to build such an amazing brand without the unwavering help from my family and friends, who not only lended a helping hand with pop-ups, markets/shows, but also purchased goods from me over the years – since day one.
I can’t forget to mention my other entrepreneur friends, who encouraged me to stay on course, no matter how many times I needed to hit the reset button — and to see the potential in myself, that they saw in me.
I appreciate all of them for the continued love & support. They know exactly who they are!
