We had the good fortune of connecting with Tahir Coleman Register and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tahir Coleman, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Habits that helped me succeed include habits around discipline. I am a trained actor, and multi-instrumentalist, I was literally raised to have discipline, and when you don’t it’s hard to navigate life, but also, move forward in a way that’s beneficial to others around you, and yourself. When I started my podcast; “The Real, For Real” it is discipline that keeps me going. Habits like: planning, meditating on the idea, researching, mock episodes, testing, trying (rehearsal), all before actually doing the final project are all apart of discipline.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart of most, is that I started when I was five in entertainment education, and learned how to do it all. Actor, singer-songwriter, producer, mixing, mastering, lyrics, writing, screenwriting, photography, editing, filmmaking, you name it, I can do it! I graduated college in 2013 having studied all of those things and more. I am a sponge, I have discipline in my art and that is what I’m known for. Quality sets me apart, but also, talent. I am most proud of TheBLACKMedia because It was something I never imagined I’d own or have. In 2013 when I graduated college with a BA in Contemporary Arts, I fully expected to be an Actor, Singer-songwriter with a career in that. I though my photography, and filmmaking would be a later success, and never thought about owning a media outlet, but when I saw the need for positivity in that space, I knew, I had to do something. So, I did. TheBLACKMedia is a safe space for all people of colour; no gossip, no rumors, no negativity, redefining what it means to be a person of colour in entertainment. And with the addition of the podcast; “The Real,For Real” I am able to provide an anchor for people to trust and depend on quality, but intelligence in a person they can trust.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots in the city are my bed and my shower! I love it, I often go there alone, and have never visited the shower with anyone. It’s a fun escape for me, but if my friends were over, we would head to Papadeuax, Six Feet Under, Creole Soul, Oakland Cemetery, or a walk on the Belt Line. I am the boring friend who rather sit home and heal, talk, create, and laugh. I don’t drink or smoke, never been to a club or bar, but if I had one wish it would be to be on the beach often, and that would be the place where my friends and I would go.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a huge shout out to Christina Leau! I made her the producer of my podcast, even though she has no experience with lighting, cameras, mics, etc. She is teachable, and ready! I literally cannot do my podcast (“The Real, For Real”), a new addition to my media outlet TheBLACKMedia, without her. She is a singer-songwriter, an excellent Mom of two who comes to my studio AFTER WORK, to help me set up. I trust her, and that’s a lot for me. I literally would not have a podcast without her. I am eternally grateful!
