We had the good fortune of connecting with Tae Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tae, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve worked for other people, I still do and I just don’t feel I’m at my best making rich folks richer while I’m sacrificing who I am, mentally and physically, for something that doesn’t actually pour into me. I’ll give the shirt off my back and shoes off my feet for the right circumstance. I want my own, to be able to provide opportunities for those who otherwise wouldn’t be afforded to them, so they can do the same. I wanna be the gift that keeps on giving even when I’m gone.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art really is different pieces of me I share with the world, kind of how i become vulnerable to others in a way. I also create to provoke thoughts and emotions. I feel like perspective can definitely change how a painting or photo is seen. I’m excited to see where my talents take me and the folks who support me next, I have a couple ideas I’m working on right now from coffee table books to hat pins and I just hope they are received well by the masses. I’ve learned it’s ok to ask for help, I’ve always done for others because that’s just my nature but sometimes we forget it’s ok to need a helping hand or a listening ear. I’m not totally good at it yet but I, as well as some of my projects, are a work in progress lol. What I would love for the world to know about me and my brand? That it’s all genuinely me, I’m not here for hype, gimmicky themes, or anything Of the sort. I want y’all to feel things, take this journey with me to improving and having fun and spreading love every step of the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d definitely take her to get her favorite food… wings! Lol. Definitely hit JR crickets in midtown, for authenticity. I have a couple spots I have saved, I can’t recall off the top of my head, but definitely would take her to eat. Definitely taking her to see where MLK grew up. We’re hitting the Outkast mural for pics. Definitely hanging out with some of my favorite people here also.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wanna shoutout all the black creatives making it happen for themselves and their communities in every positive way possible.
