We had the good fortune of connecting with Tae Millhouse and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tae, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Honestly…. It was 2013 going on 14 and I was just released from Santa Rita, a county jail in The Bay Area… I was frustrated, I knew I needed something positive & purposeful to focus my attention on…. Even though I was then working at a public elementary school as a Special Educations Teacher at the time, I was losing my motivation for the situation. I started brainstorming about ideas and a organization that could help other people struggling with the same trials that I at the time were struggling with myself. One particular “Demon” that I was battling with at the time was physically fighting others often. In my early 20’s I resorted to being pretty violent towards people. Something I’m not proud of, but it was my life at the time. I knew their was a deeper issue within myself but unfortunately it was hard for me to manage my emotions…and I felt alleviated when I would beat people up, sadly. Literally “Beat The Pain” came to me one day while I was at work talking to my significant other at the time….

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I just don’t give up! I don’t know if there is any deeper answer. I have confidence in The Most High. That’s it. I know that I have so many shortcomings & things that stagnate me at times but since I was a little girl I’ve always received reminders of who I have potential to become. Even when I lose my way I can feel in my body a indescribable fire that burns for me to keep fighting against “things” that have robbed or prevented me from obtaining something that I desire. I think that’s what it is. Nothing is easy about what I’m pursuing, but I’m learning to enjoy the challenges rather than cry & complain so much. I’m definitely realizing that endurance plays a major factor in accomplishing goals, and emotions will interfere if not tamed correctly. I appreciate all parts of this beautiful movie we call “Life” . “Beat The Pain” is allowing me to express that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Torch! A nice new hot spot located Downtown Oakland. Nice rooftop view , definitely think everyone should go there. M2 as well.. as far as day party, night life event type scenes. I’m a art nerd so I like MoMa, “Museum of Modern Art” in San Francisco for sure. I cannot forget to mention Lake Merritt area, You get the nice restaurant options, scenery & vibes everytime.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Sounds cliche but it’s my truth, my family is my inspiration…My mom & my Dad, my Granny, my siblings, my Uncle, my Auntie , my cousins, my entire tribe! Not to mention these very high filled emotional relationships that I’ve been in lol. All of these characters help make the story! Facts! My life is its own book, but I’m honestly inspired by the Bible. The bible tells me my story which is history.
