We had the good fortune of connecting with Tabitha Nwaenyi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tabitha, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
A very important saying that I have adopted is “There are no losses, just lessons.” This quote is all about choosing to have a positive and growth-oriented mindset instead of focusing on what did not go as planned. In life, failure, or more accurately, setbacks, are unavoidable; in fact, they are part of achieving success! There is not a single successful person among us who has not had to face some kind of failure. I use this quote as a gentle reminder when things aren’t going my way that it’s actually a good thing because it’s an opportunity to pivot to a new and improved path. To be honest, it’s easier said than done, but the mind is very powerful, so like with everything, you have to practice.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Poetry in a Jar was born out of my love for candles and a desire to enjoy them with clean and safe ingredients. I’m Dominica-born and Virgin Islands-raised, so I wanted to infuse some of my Culture into my candle obsession. I’m a wife, mom, registered nurse, and now an entrepreneur. Poetry in a Jar is a poetic tribute to the Caribbean, where I grew up, using fragrances that evoke feelings of nostalgia, peace, and comfort.

All of our candles are free of dyes and phthalates, and we use 100% natural soy wax and high-quality fragrance oils. Soy wax is a plant-based, natural product that’s also safe for your skin. It’s vegan and sustainable. Our candles are long-lasting, and the hemp wicks are lead-free.

I am most proud of the fact that I accomplished something I set out to do. Success is measured differently for everyone, and to me, success is overcoming my fears and actually doing what I set out to do. I am extremely proud of my business and the energy that I am releasing into the world. Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart, but it’s extremely rewarding.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am very big on creating memories, so the first place we’d go is City Winery for one of their many live shows. I love experiencing the culture, sights, smells, and foods of the city, so we would book a walking tour of the Atlanta BeltLine. It would be a great way to see street art, learn history, and enjoy some cuisine from locally owned restaurants.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to send a special shout out to my mom, the very first entrepreneur in my family. In Dominica, my mom owned a very small restaurant in the Roseau Market Square. I remember seeing my mom wake up while it was still dark outside to cook, gather supplies, and walk to the Market, carrying everything in her hands because we did not own a vehicle. As an adult, looking back, I can now understand and greatly appreciate the amount of pain, sweat, and determination it took for her to persevere against many odds in her desire to create a better life for us.
